Question for community, notably those with 3D pen experience. The terrain maps I print use multi-color printing to color the trails, which takes more time and filament to do. Less important roads I leave as grooves. But could the whole map be grooves that get filled in with a 3D pen afterwards? It’s fine detail and the pen work I’ve seen is pretty uneven, but I’ve never tried it.

Siff,

@jerzone I don’t have much experience with 3D pens, so I don’t have an answer for you, but I’m wondering whether you have tried painting the trails instead of filling them with plastic? The effort should be roughly the same if not less

@Siff I haven’t. My hands aren’t as stable as they used to be and I was never good/patient at painting, but you’re right it may be essentially the same effort.

Siff,

@jerzone I know what you mean! 🙁

I haven’t done this recently, but I was either sanding the higher parts (not an option for you, I guess) or masking to minimize the clean up (which will be way too much overhead)

Here is another idea: use a 2-part putty with long curing time. Make a thin “wire” out of it and then squish it in place. The long curing time will give you time to do the work and to trim the excess. Depending on the putty, you could sand it (carefully) at the end

Siff,

@jerzone
Another idea 2: Use a thread in the desired colour, press it in the grooves and then soak it in with super glue

2/2

@Siff Lots of good ideas. I tried the thread approach a couple years ago. It looks ok, but it’s super fiddly and in dense trail areas there's a lot of intersections, so either doubling up on thread layers or trying to get clean cuts/abutments.
Was thinking today it might be interesting to make a silicon cast of it and then reproduce it in plaster or something.

@jerzone I don't have an answer but what printer are you using, I'm just interested.

@m750 I think same one as yours: BL X1C

@jerzone that's not mine, my partner has all the cool toys. ;)

@m750 it’s a cool toy!
