How did you get into anime?

Although my first anime was back during early childhood (back when anime programme block was a regular thing in Indonesian television). Vulcan just really started following anime seriously during junior high school back in 2012 (classmates are into Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online during that time, and we often chatted about latest anime airing during class break. A friend was also into osu! and we played together).

So, kbin anime, how did you get into anime? Share your story here.

@VulcanSphere it was a very long time, I remember I watched a shounen anime at about 7 years old. I really liked that anime but I didn't watch much. But I didn't know the name of it... But when I get older, I realize it is Reborn for no reason... maybe I have déjà vu 🥺

The_Helmet_Stays_On,

While I could count watching Pokémon way back then I didn’t really get into it until I was visiting family and my aunt had Inuyasha playing and for some reason it had me hooked.

@VulcanSphere Kaguya-sama was the first anime I ever watched and enjoyed

Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust got the ball rolling for me. Saw it on the shelf and the artwork and premise looked interesting. Loved it!

After that, I asked the guy at the video store for recommendations and ended up binging Evangelion next. Then I was a goner and just started devouring what the clerk suggested and rarely found anything from his list that I didn't love.

By the time I caught up on all the classics, a ton of absolute classics came out around the same time, and I wondered if there were actually any bad anime. :P

All within a year or 2 was:

  • Gurren Lagann
  • The Garden of Sinners
  • Sword of the Stranger
  • Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
  • Kanon
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
  • Utawarerumono

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but I wondered at the time if it would always be this good. Feels like a bit of a golden age now.

A lot of my classmates in my university faculty are a anime enjoyers.... I guess it's kinda inevitable haha

And, yes, I'm an IT student

Also, me having lived in Japan for three years kinda makes it even more easier to get into anime

I'll admit though, I'm only a casual enjoyer. The manga I'm most enthusiastic about is probably only Berserk

My dad! He’s been into anime for as long as I remember and would sit me down in front of the TV to watch sailor moon and Pokémon when I was young. Eventually, I just ended up watching everything he watched; Tenchi Muyo, DBZ, G Gundam, Zoids, etc. I’ve been into anime ever since. Even now, we still call each other to talk about the last episode of whatever show we’re both watching, send each other recs, and go to cons together. It’s great!

It was 9 or 10 years ago I think, back when I still used iFunny regularly. One day there was a featured gif from the anime A Certain Scientific Railgun, but I didn't know what it was at the time.

It was a clip from the first episode, a scene where the main character flicks a coin at an oncoming car, except the coin shoots out at hypersonic speed and blows up the road in front of the car. It was captioned something like "Me when slow cars won't move out if the way". A few days later, I went back to the comments on the post to find out what the clip was from. I watched the whole first season on YouTube on my 3DS that week and it's been my favorite anime ever since.

A friend had been trying to convince me for months to watch Attack On Titan at the time too, but I just wasn't interested in anime until that meme.

alternian,

I recently finished watching A Certain Scientific Railgun and I loved it, it’s probably the first time I’ve heard someone talk about it online.

It's not too uncommon to see it mentioned in places like r/anime (Misaka even won the 2016 r/anime Best Girl Contest), but it's definitely taking a back seat now to newer anime. What got you to watch it?

Probably showing my age, but Robotech. Really the first anime series widely broadcasted to an American audience.

Zip,

Watch Akira. That is all.

Robotech 100%. I was a kid in the 80's and I didn't progress past early Anime , but damn was Robotech huge back then.

cowvin,

Yep, this was probably my first anime. I wouldn't say it got me into anime by itself but it certainly opened the door. After that, my sister and my friends kind of pulled me in. Haha.

hitechlowlife,

I can still remember watching the first season of Macross on rented Betamax tapes. That's almost 4 decades ago, now.

metaStatic,

oh are we showing our age? My first Anime was Astro Boy. I would harass my mother to rent it every time we rented anything.

Offline,

I think the first anime I've ever watched was the first season of Pokemon. But what really got me into anime was the first anime movie I ever watch Spirted Away. It blew my little mind away with it's strange and fascinating world, characters, and adventure. It's still in my top five all time favorite shows to this day.

The earliest anime I remember watching was Grand Prix or something, but fully got into the fandom with Spice and Wolf. Came for the wolf girl, stayed for the good story (and the wolf girl).

Jetix had dubbed episodes of Naruto that I would always watch, but (I think?) they ran out of dubbed so they kept replaying the chuunin exam arc. Child me needed to know what happened, I googled it, and that was the gateway!

I would watch Pokémon, DBZ, and such as a kid but in 2001 at 14 years of age I watched Neon Genesis and thus began a life long love affair with anime proper

spazahedron,

Battle of the Planets back in the 70s .. basically a reworked Gatchaman for the U.S. market. I think it was on local TV right after Scooby-Doo.

My friend and I were sorta making fun of it in 2016.

And he said that he'd watch one episode of an anime (rezero) to see how bad it was. And like 2 minutes in he's like, "wtf this is really good" and I watched it and agreed.

And now its still my favorite anime to this day! :)

My friends and I somehow got hooked on the Natuto manga back in school. After that I watched the Anime and really enjoyed the medium, so I stuck with it
