Hacker News would be mine, the amount of time wasted on that website in insane (tbf I'm interested in tech and programming), thank god for their noprocrast option.

coloradogiant,

Good one!

My number one at the moment, and for a while I guess, would be Reddit. Other than that though I’m on arstechnica quite a bit for the news there.

Maybe not the type of stuff you were looking for, but here goes…..

I’ve gotta go with Invidious on this one. Every damn day I’m there. Sure, it’s just YT wearing a cloak and dark sunglasses, but I get access so thousands of hours of educational content without getting fucked by Google’s algos or advertising.

Also use Nitter to follow the war in Europe while cloaking myself from Elon Musk’s nonsense.

It’s on my mental list to try a subscription to Nebula for more interesting content.

And if I can’t be found in these places, you can find me sailing the high seas. Arrrrr.

coloradogiant,

Thanks for pointing me towards Invidious, hadn't seen that before and it looks amazing

It is. More instances than I can count. Google sent them a cease and desist order this week. Sounds like a badge of honor as far as I’m concerned.

My issue with Nebula is that it's a closed federation of content creators. That's not bad per-se, but it means that if you wanted to make the jump from YouTube to Nebula, there are plenty of content creators who get left behind. It would be really nice to have a recommendation system or something so that users can at least signal who they'd like to see on the platform.

I prefer the looks of Piped (accessed through LibreTube on Android, so I get to sync my subscriptions on desktop and mobile and still have no ads), but Invidious is pretty great as well.

I remember there was a similar front-end before Invidious, but they got shut down by Google. I can't remember the name for the life of me, only that it was similar to Youtube's so that you only had to change a few letters in the URL to open the videos through it. Newtube? Viewtube?

also if you haven't heard of it yet, check out LibRedirect, it automatically redirects you to similar privacy front-ends for a bunch of other services: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/libredirect/

Someone got me onto RateYourMusic recently and I didn't think I would use it very much, but so far it has been useful for finding new-to-me music to listen to. Lots of lists to browse through and the related artists links on pages are handy as well. I think it is probably more useful for people with physical collections but you can add digital releases as well which is nice. The automated recommendations it has given me have been pretty good too!

Nice to see another RYM user here. I joined thanks to a Twitter account that posted the shitposting side of RYM, ended up not taking part on that so much, but RYM is a legitimately useful site for music nerds.

FWIW, for those not on RYM, they have two auto-recommendation systems: one recommends things in genres/descriptors you have a strong affinity for, and then another system that goes in the opposite direction and recommends stuff outside your comfort zone. It's not perfect, but I've found some albums I love in both systems, that Spotify would not have recommended at all.

Oh nice! I haven't been adventurous enough to go digging around in those outside-the-comfort-zone reccs yet but I'm sure there will be some gems to discover :D

coloradogiant,

Looks really interesting, thanks!

vegyk0z6,

Furkot for planning a road trip. Much better than adding multi stops on gooogle maps.

metaStatic,

First thing I did when leaving reddit was move to Feedly.com and start adding good sites.

And because I also have kbin on there it's my new front page

  • YouTube, with a watch later playlist. I heard on fedi that YouTube's recommendations are absolute garbage if you use an adblocker. I don't know how true it is, but if it is it explains why I've transitioned to using Watch Later.
  • The fediverse instance I use that's solely for microblogging.
  • Rate Your Music. Probably my favourite music site right now, and one of the few sites I've given money to. It's great for discovering new music that you'll love IMO. It's been going on for a couple decades now, definitely worth having a look.
  • MusicBrainz, which is basically a giant encyclopedia of music releases for computers to use. I've added releases to MusicBrainz from stuff I've bought. If you've used MusicBee, MP3Tag, or their own tagger Picard, you've used MusicBrainz. I've since replaced Last.fm with ListenBrainz since the data quality on the latter is much better than Last.fm.

What have you done. I should not have clicked on that.

DarkChocolateOMaGosh,

So this might not answer the question, but since there are a lot of good suggestions for interesting websites, I thought people would run into the same issue that i had, which is going to multiple websites vs just an app. Just to let you guys know, you can use RSS apps on your phone, I use Feedly for example and you can build your interests from there without going to multiple websites, you just have to search for their RSS links.

solifugo,

@DarkChocolateOMaGosh can't recommend RSS enough. I hate YouTube algorithms etc, but you can keep up with your favourite channels using RSS. Same with newsletter subscription (but not sure if that only works on Inoreader Pro)
Most news places like Slashdot or hakernews are easier to follow using RSS, same for comics and of course blogs! (Yes, at least for some topics, they still exists)

I think people will start to realise how useful RSS is and go back to use it more and more
