@KydiaMusic schools used to be a pipeline for factory drones.

Now they're just free daycare.

I'm not sure which mode was worse.

@KydiaMusic for several years now the Asian education system has been like this. Against all the measures they repeatedly come out at the top
But recently they have realised they are not producing lateral thinkers, so they are poorly suited to leadership roles.
The late Sir Ken Robinson flagged this up many years ago. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=sir+ken+robinson+ted+talk+2006&t=iphone&iax=videos&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DiG9CE55wbtY&ia=videos

@KydiaMusic Totally this in . Here the kids spend at least half of their education with rote learning from fill-in-the-blanks factoid text. At age 15 or so it gets marginally better.

@KydiaMusic As someone who went through a lot (and I mean a lot!) of school based purely on memorization, god yes I feel this.

Turns out raw memorization power does not help you as much in the real world as the other stuff, either.

@KydiaMusic Depends on the subject. History was the worst - I was told after failing the O level that the marking scheme for the essays was one mark per name and one mark per date, with zero marks for explaining what happened and why.

@KydiaMusic

I mean, it's not like education actually aims to make you into a smarter person, just a more uniform one. Sadly.

@KydiaMusic I always did pretty bad at school and also mediocre at university. Then one day, there was a class in which the teacher said he would allow us to bring all our materials to consult during the exam. The rational was that in real life, that information would be available. The exam questions were problems that required multiple sources of knoweledge combined.
Well, in that subject I got the best grade of the whole class.
