Spain. Posts don't represent any employer 🙄.

Keyboard warrior against certain social injustices. I have neither time, nor energy, nor inclination to fight them all, sorry.

A long time ago I enjoyed breathing the atmosphere at around 320 ppm CO2.

Having lived in Spain for almost 20 years and having taken Spain up on their kind offer of citizenship post-Brexit, I have a view on this.

Brits who lived here legally pre-Brexit could apply for permanent residence to carry on living in their Little Britain communities. No 90 day restriction.

A very, very few applied for citizenship & had to pass A2 Spanish language.

2/2 Some Brits thought they could continue to live here under the radar, not pay any taxes, enjoy medical cover with their EHIC, continue to drive on their UK plated cars, buy the Daily Mail, vote to leave the EU, eat imported pork pies, drink cheap pints and smoke cheap smokes and that nothing would change.

I certainly know of such people.

They had a surprise.

I just looked up the stats for Brits getting Spanish nationality.

2016: 30
2017: 13
2018: 35
2019: 606
2020: 135
2021: 867 (including me 🤟)
2022: 415

Note it takes about 2.5 years between deciding you want to do it and getting it - if all the planets align, paperwork - wise. Hence the bumps in 2019 and 2021.

marcusjenkins,
@marcusjenkins@mastodon.social avatar

@FiveSeventeen @dwasmkuk @Melinda @Wen @humanhorseshoes @alexproe @Roadwarrior29 @JackTheCat @TCMuffin Let's put these numbers in context. There are currently more than 250,000 Brits resident in Spain. Over the last ten years about 1% have taken Spanish citizenship. If you have lived here legally for 10+ years, can speak the language to A2 level and you're not a criminal, you can apply for citizenship. I don't know why more Brits aren't doing it, to be honest.

marcusjenkins,
@marcusjenkins@mastodon.social avatar

@Lassielmr @FiveSeventeen @dwasmkuk @Melinda @Wen @humanhorseshoes @alexproe @Roadwarrior29 @JackTheCat @TCMuffin

Language level A2 isn't too much to ask for if you've lived in a country for 10+ years - unless you're British in which case foreign languages probably (statistically) are not your forté.

The renounce the British citizenship thing is a storm in a teacup. You sign a document to Spain that you renounce (present tense) your British citizenship. That's the beginning and end of it.

@marcusjenkins@mastodon.social avatar

@FiveSeventeen @Lassielmr @dwasmkuk @Melinda @Wen @humanhorseshoes @alexproe @Roadwarrior29 @JackTheCat @TCMuffin

Well, congrats on C2 German. I'm at about C1 Spanish. Many native Spaniards wouldn't pass a C2 exam.

Of course, you know about the cheap beer, relatively (to UK) cheap tobacco, relatively (to UK) cheap houses, sunny weather and widely-available British food, TV, pubs, etc. in Spain, right? 😅 (Not making excuses for them, but that's how it works!)

marcusjenkins,
@marcusjenkins@mastodon.social avatar

@bazcurtis @EarthOrgUK Here in Southern Spain air conditioning is pretty much a requirement these days. Unless your aircon is a total old knacker, they're really not noticeably noisy compared to the ambient tyre noise of cars, etc. And we get a bonus of heating - most houses did without heating in the winter before. But people were made of stronger stuff 💪

Fujifilm fans: Have we reached peak Fujifilm? Their mirrorless cameras have all been SO good over the last ten years that any photographer could pick any of them up and be in control of their image right away. Great handling, great user interface, great sensors. I look at the X100VI and the X-T50 and think, meh, so what? (And, bloody hell, that's a LOT of money!)

@timbray I think it's the Tictok kids that have really got sucked into the film simulations. They're fun, but memory cards are so cheap now that there's no excuse not to be shooting RAW+JPEG - and play with the RAW interpretation at your leisure.

Top plate dials: film speed on the left, shutter speed on the right. Lens rings: nearest is aperture, furthest is focus. The rest is candy, like a ND filter lever, focus mode lever,…

marcusjenkins,
@marcusjenkins@mastodon.social avatar

@masayuki60 @timbray It would be kind of cool to have the film simulation as a slide switch / lever on the back. So as you review a photo you could flick through "Hmm, Kodachrome? HP5?…" and see the results straight away on the screen. But you'd need to have the RAW there...

@masayuki60 @timbray I used to be a big fan of Pentax M series 35mm. Like an MX with one of the gorgeous M series lenses: 85mm f2, 40mm pancake, 50mm f1.4 🤤

While touring #Andalusia in #Spain, I spotted a gleaming tower. Intrigued, I looked it up and found out it was the #Gemasolar Thermosolar Plant which can supply power to 27,500 homes and uses molten salt heat storage technology to keep generating power when there's no sun. More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemasolar_Thermosolar_Plant - Perhaps #Italy could do with a few similar plants. #energy

marcusjenkins,

@alexproe It would be interesting to see how IT & ES compare for installed solar power from residential / rooftop. Spain's right wing government had a cosy arrangement with their future employers in the electricity business that, effectively, made it illegal to install solar at home (illegal or you had to set up to install a meter to pay a tax making it pointless). They repealed the law in 2018, but people are still a bit nervous that a future right wing govt might restore it.

#impuestoalsol

marcusjenkins,
@marcusjenkins@mastodon.social avatar

@alexproe There is this which isn't giving the installed rooftop solar stats per se, I think, but certainly makes a nice comparison on how good each country is with respect to its encouragement & support for people to install solar panels on their rooftops.

Italy wins over Spain!

Biden set to levy 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs this week

Both the US and EU are deeply concerned about heavily subsidized Chinese OEMs.

@arstechnica I don't know about US, but in EU we're more worried about apocalyptic climate change that is accelerated by people continuing to burn stuff (including, but not limited to, in internal combustion engine cars) than a few car manufacturers having a hard time because they doggedly stuck to designing and making more shitty petrol, diesel & hybrid cars.

I'm sure I'm not the only person in the world who has solar panels on their roofs who has wasted quite some time in the mornings watching the magic of the power coming on.

This smugness is matched by looking back at a bell curve graph of production for the day where you've used up almost everything that the panels have produced and yet drawn almost nothing from the grid.

Linux can finally run your car’s safety systems and driver-assistance features

@arstechnica As long as those computers continue to interact with me via switches, knobs and buttons, that's OK. What's not OK is swapping in a giant touch screen to replace all those controls for which we develop muscle memory and can soon use without distraction from, erm, driving.

What's not mentioned here is steel-reinforced concrete structures' lifespan - 100 years is an optimistic limit even for a quality construction. So all this shit will need to be torn down and rebuilt within 100 years. That's assuming that all these buildings in China are being made to top-notch standards which, from what I've seen on the Interwebs, is definitely not the case.
