is over and now it is probably the right moment to ask how you status changed because of travelling to/from the event and/or joining the congress in person.

Please note, it's not about only. At my last Congress, I missed 1½ days because of and this was long before COVID.

Please boost!

I was at 37C3 and I ...

It's >2 weeks since which now seems to be the right moment for the 2nd survey including a longer incubation period:

Did you get sick during/after attending 37C3 in person? 🤒

In other words: Showing any symptoms or being test-positive somehow and even if you brought it to the event yourself.

Please note, it's not just about and Mastodon only gives me just 4 choices for surveys.

Boost to reach a similar crowd compared to the previous survey with 1150 participants! 😷

DasTausW,
@DasTausW@mastodon.social avatar

@publicvoit Is there a way to see the result without participating?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@DasTausW Yea. Press the button in the web interface of Mastodon.

kentborg,

@publicvoit Curious what the results will be…

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@kentborg The results of the first survey were interesting as well.

pludikovsky,
@pludikovsky@chaos.social avatar

@publicvoit Non-option: Wore a mask ~40% of the time, mostly in the larger halls, did not get sick.

zeitgenosse,
@zeitgenosse@graz.social avatar

@publicvoit I think the first answer should be:

»I wore a good mask (N95, FFP2 or better, sealing well) 100% of the time while inside (including public transportation on my way to and from the congress) and only took it off outside and did not visit any restaurant and I still got sick; and the probability that I got it somewhere else is low.«

But I do agree that proper (automated) ventilation is a far more effective measure than mask recommendations for an event of this scale.

daswarkeinhuhn,

@publicvoit so ~ >10% got sick.

miketango,
@miketango@chaos.social avatar

@daswarkeinhuhn @publicvoit Amount of people sick with mask the same as without mask.

Amount of people not sick wearing masks not significantly better than without masks.

Conclusion: Masks don't do shit.

wonka,
@wonka@chaos.social avatar

@miketango That conclusion from a poll barely 10% of the attendance answered? 🤔

@daswarkeinhuhn @publicvoit

miketango,
@miketango@chaos.social avatar

@wonka @daswarkeinhuhn @publicvoit

yea not bad considering the fragmentation of congress communications throughout the fediverse and other outlets.

tvluke,
@tvluke@social.chaotikum.org avatar

@wonka @miketango @daswarkeinhuhn @publicvoit however, assuming 10% wore a mask (that seems to be kind of consensus, I would agree) and the answers are truthful (big if) then around 50% of all mask waring participants answered the poll. Which is a lot!

10% in total is not bad either.

Anyway, this is quite amazing in terms of amount, I feel like we will probably not get much better data on this issue of masks and 37C3...

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@tvluke @wonka @miketango @daswarkeinhuhn I was very surprised on the number of participants! 😲

I still want to re-publish the same survey in a couple of days because many people reminded me that the incubation period is much longer than the end of my survey.

I doubt that the second one will be as popular though.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@miketango @daswarkeinhuhn Wrong conclusion, I'd say.

There were less than ten percent masks on the event which is a clear indicator that the bias of this survey is huge. You can't really draw much of any conclusion out of that.

Furthermore, science proved that masks are a great tool to prevent sickness. No doubt about that.

garfieldairlines,

@publicvoit Is physical injury also in the scope ?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@garfieldairlines Nope. Masks don't protect against that, as far as I know.

max_headroom,

@publicvoit I feel like this is reaching the wrong audience. It looked like not even 10% of the people were wearing masks, yet around 50% of this poll claim to have worn a mask.

wonka,
@wonka@chaos.social avatar

@max_headroom 1150 answers, > 10000 attendees. I guess a lot of the unmasked didn't answer.

@publicvoit

@publicvoit need an option for "wasn't at the conference. Just want to see the result "

frumble,
@frumble@chaos.social avatar

@mhamzahkhan There is an option since Mastodon 4.2! Look beneath the poll! @publicvoit

Nitpicky Nerd PhD Scientists of Mastodon™️ have a complaint:

since most cases of Covid are asymptomatic, most people don't know if they got "sick" or not

of course, you used the word "sick" instead of infected

but still

wonka,
@wonka@chaos.social avatar

@failedLyndonLaRouchite Tests were handed out, and I, at least, tested before travelling to Congress every day.

@publicvoit

mullana,
@mullana@chaos.social avatar

@publicvoit
I'm really surprised that I didn't come home sick this year. I fully expected to be down for at least a week like I was after every other Congress before.
I wore a mask all the time except for when I was on stage and for a few hours on day 4 while preparing the closing slides.
It's probably not just the mask, but also a bit of luck and the fact that I made sure to get enough sleep each day because I didn't want to look half dead for the closing. 😅

kkarhan,
@kkarhan@mstdn.social avatar

@publicvoit boosted it for extended range, since I did not attend in part due to lack of a !

volkersfreunde,

@kkarhan @publicvoit there were plenty of masks for the health conscious people. Why need a mandate?

buddhabrot,

@publicvoit just did a two-sided chi squared test on the current result. there is no significant effect of masks visible in either direction.

wonka,
@wonka@chaos.social avatar

@publicvoit FFP3 all the time, except when eating or drinking. No signs of Seuche yet.

ThomasWaldmann,

@wonka @publicvoit It's definitely FFP3-worthy when meeting ("sharing the air") with 10.000 people from all over the planet.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

I see. Maybe I'll republish the same survey in a week or so.

This could get some additional numbers as well.

lgehr,
@lgehr@chaos.social avatar

@publicvoit also i did wear a mask occasionally. I think this should be an option

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@lgehr Well, I'm limited to four options. 🤷
