I know people complain about @Vivaldi being not fully open and being based on , but you just can't beat when it comes to features. I read a lot on the Internet, but sometimes I just don't have the time to do it right now. Vivaldi has an integrated which I can just add my current page to with relative ease. To make it easier, I created a to add the current tab to the Reading List and then close it. I put that chain on my toolbar with a custom icon.

sudoedit,

@mike @Vivaldi I’m a Firefox die hard, but I did recently download Vivaldi. The interface is a little overwhelming for me, but I do see the appeal of having so many things built into the browser itself without needing a bunch of add-ons.

It does have a really good reader view which is something I absolutely love in Firefox.

@mike @Vivaldi

If they would just make a version

@mike @Vivaldi The fact that Vivaldi is good (and seems like a nice company) just makes it even sadder to me that they chose Chromium over Gecko when they started. 😕

paul,

@havn @mike @Vivaldi Yeah, this annoys me too. However, I prefer to think of them (and I think they think of themselves) as a Blink browser rather than based on Chromium (i.e. Chromium reskinned)
It's a small difference, but an important one.

@paul @mike @Vivaldi How so? Does it change the amount of power Google holds over the web?
(Genuine question, BTW. Realised it might sound insincere. 😅)

paul,

@havn @mike @Vivaldi
No, doesn't change the amount of power at all... which is why I agree I wish Vivaldi used a different engine
but, only using the blink engine rather than building on top of chrome, for me, helps a little in feeling I've not gone "full chromium"

it might be something I'm fooling myself into, I dunno
(p.s. I have been a Firefox user since 2004, I love it, just had to use something different so the web worked properly. I don't like having to have done that, but Vivaldi is IMHO the best option right now... and qutebrowser)

@paul @mike @Vivaldi I completely understand why you’ve done it - but that so many people use Blink, contributes a lot to the fact that the web «don’t work properly» with Firefox. 😕

That's why I'm super stubborn with using Gecko or WebKit - but I'm lucky: I mostly don't have any tools I need that only work on Blink. However, I recently got a new job, and don't you know it: I have to use Blink for the tool they use… 🤷🏻‍♂️
(I use Vivaldi with that tool.)

paul,

@havn @mike @Vivaldi Yep.
I should also say being a tech-y person, switching between browsers is simple. I have things sync'd outside of the browsers anyway so I can jump into others when I want or need to. But yes, being forced to use a certain web engine goes against every fibre of my being, but it's one I've had to do... for now

@paul @mike @Vivaldi Yeah, good point.

But even though it was tempting to change to Vivaldi or Arc full time, I decided to use Vivaldi only as a portal for that specific tool (it’s not for my full-time job). So at least I’ll leave a track for website owners, showing I use WebKit and Gecko, the rest of the day. 😛

joerivlekken,

@mike @Vivaldi I also love it because it’s a good example of a private company doing things -in my opinion at least- the right way: employee ownership, an actual healthy long term vision without exaggerated profit goals, real engagement with it’s community, regular feature updates… Yes it’s closed source but I believe it was only the specific UI parts? (Ex. the preferences panel)

softinio,

@mike think you will like arc browser! Give it a try!

@softinio I was going to give it a spin, but it only gives me the option to join the Windows waiting list, and that was from Ubuntu. I don't have an iPhone, so it seems there's no option to try it right now.

@mike @Vivaldi I am sure Vivaldi has a lot of great features and I can't repeat "use what worls best for you" often enough. I wouldn't touch a closed source software if I got great open source alternatives myself and won't use Vivaldi but the witch hunt for people using their prefered software is rediculess, just use what works best for you and make a copy paste response for idiots! ;)

    @danarel It really is great. I've been using it for years, and they just keep adding useful features. I love the Reading List. I love the integrated Notes feature. I love the custom search engines. I've even started using the RSS reader for some of my feeds. Integrated translation software, and web panels are just part of my day to day. I feel outright hobbled when I have to use any other browser.

    @thestrangelet It really is. If there's something you want it to do that it doesn't, you can always suggest a feature on their community forum. They take those into consideration.
