I'm torn between disliking the use of "Standard" to mean "English" in #scifi and #fantasy, because from a #worldbuilding perspective it seems kinda western/american/British centric but it also makes something easier amd more accessible to translate for real world audiences, who can now pretend "Galactic Standard" or "Federation Standard" as their native tongues, putting them on equal footing with English-speaking audiences.
I've always taken "Common" or "Standard" language in a story setting to be just that, the most widely use or official language spoken there It's not Engish or any other known language per se It's just presented that way to the reader/watcher as that's mostly the audience
In Spanish created Fantasy/SciFi story I'd expect Standard to be presented in Spanish
Star Wars eludes to Galactic Standard not being English in the world with its text font for signs and documents
It burns a little and you have to recharge it every few hours and the quality is 1990s vhs tape... but other than that it's a miracle of 23rd century technology!

#SteamDeck is the first #Valve hardware I own, second being the Steam Deck Dock. I finally know what #Apple shills feel like cos I’m now the same with Valve and I 100% want and need more hw products from them. Whatever they cook in the future, I hope it’ll include a #SteamOS laptop (they’ve included great speakers, mic, and amazing haptic/“fake” touchpads on the Steam Deck, I need em in a laptop), a SteamOS “console” box perhaps, and a #gaming controller as good as the built-in ones on the Deck. The cherry on top would be them selling these hardware at a low margin or even loss like they did with the Deck, to keep them affordable with the hopes of enticing more people into the #Steam ecosystem like they’ve successfully done with me.
Looks like my TPU woes with endless jamming and foamy prints were just a case of a spectacularly shitty filament. This Sunlu (which has a bad rep but has never let me down) prints absolutely fine.
Why do passports take weeks to process? I don’t like not having my passport and at least the ability to just fly during the holidays. But it’s better to renew it earlier than later because apparently some countries don’t like it if you are within 6 months of expiration as well.
Here’s to lots of travel in 2024 and beyond!
I'm not sure how long it takes not but back in 2010, my first passport, I was hearing 12 months Thankfully it was only 6 months No, I just have an enhanced license as I only go to Canada since I conveniently live right on the border I can see Canada from here
How can anyone seriously support Republicans when they can’t even vote to expel a known criminal (George Santos) from the house while right now the main presidential candidate they favor is also on trial.
This is far from the party of “law and order”
Loved it It was the best social media platform at the time The circles were great concept in the way they worked I used them for my interests and hobbies It really allowed me to connect with many great interesting people
Given how much of a fan of Instagram I was for a little while, it speaks volumes to me about how much they butchered it that I enjoy sharing my photos on Twitter, Threads, Masto, Bluesky etc meanwhile I just have little interest in posting them on IG.
Dear my ADHD self: Just because you’re playing a new Pokémon Crystal ROM hack this weekend does NOT mean you need to download all the tools and try making your own again.
You’ve been trying for 18 years and never make it far. It’s just not going to happen.

Anyone else use Pinesol in their laundry? I started doing it during the beginning of #Covid19 at the suggestion of a doctor friend. I use it in combination with Oxiclean, borax, detergent, and white vinegar to clean my clothes. It’s made my clothes smell great, apparently helps disinfect, and it definitely boosted my cleaning power. Just 125ml per wash (roughly half a cup in uncivilized units) per load is all you need.
It disinfects and smells great! #health#covid#laundry#lifehack
"She said the 'book banning people' have attended almost all board meetings since trustees voted down the review."
"...the recent scale and tone of these recent challenges mimics what is happening in the United States – albeit to a lesser extent – where religious and political activism has led to widespread book bans. "
Why not just put the issue to a community board or insist that Parents be concerned with only their child and check what they bring home from school plus what they leave from home with
