"Do you know why I pulled you over?" will be illegal in California from January 1, 2024. Now police have to tell you why they pulled you over.

The idea is to stop pre-textual traffic stops, in which an officer pulls over a driver, usually Latino or African-American, intending to find a reason to search their vehicle for contraband.

Research shows that pre-textual traffic stops are a racist practice that nets very little contraband.

If you're a young Black or Latino man that translates to, "Just shoot me now and get this over with."

ai6yr,

@mjausson Yeah, never hang fuzzy dice in your window or tint your windows, they can use that as a pretext as well--and frequently do.

@ai6yr I've had a mojo bag dangling from my rearview mirror as long as I've lived in California and the cops have never pulled me over for it. Which just goes to show that they don't do this racist 💩 to white, middle-class women.

ai6yr,

@mjausson Nope...

Okay.

Now make them tell people why they're being arrested, too.

That should already be the standard. Like, now that all the cops wear body cams, the arresting officer should be audibly heard saying to the suspect, "You are under arrest for drunk and disorderly conduct" or whatever.

If the guy doesn't remember it, that's fine, it'll be on record that he was told. But if it's not on the body cam or they didn't include that reason on the report, the arrest should be voided.

Usually it goes more like, "Why are you arresting me??" "For resisting arrest!!" "What the-- ow!!"
