🆕 blog! “All phones are foldable. But some are foldable only once.”

I want a new phone! I went to a wedding and everyone1 had one of those new folding phones. Social marketing has done a number on me and inveigled its way into my brain. Hey, I make decent money, perhaps I'll buy one. How much could they possibly cost? About £1,700 for a Pixel Fold […]

Ooooh! If the news about the new is accurate then it is looking very tempting.

@Edent I'm thinking it is about time to replace my 6 year old phone. I'm hoping I can make this one last a bit longer.

I worry the thing that will stop me will be banking apps preventing me from rooting my phone.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@otfrom literally the only thing I use root for is ad blocking. But I can get away with using BlockAda's VPN.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@otfrom sorry, I misread that!
Moving to Lineage is great for extending a phone's life but, yeah, some banking apps are a bit sensitive about it.
You can hide root - but it is hit and miss whether it works properly.

otfrom,
@otfrom@functional.cafe avatar

@Edent I think I'm going to upcycle some of the screens on old phones into something (not quite sure what yet). Would be good to keep a phone that does what I need for a bit longer. I'll be glad to get back to a fairphone after a few years on a one plus.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@otfrom I turned one of my old Android phones into a webcam.
Another became a remote control - but that was mostly because it had an IR blaster.

@Edent @otfrom I have a Fairphone 4 with CalyxOS. Banking apps were fine. I did run it with /e/ for a while, but bootloader was unlocked, so some bank apps did not work.

    It blocks add in apps - that's my main use for it.

    @otfrom @Edent I've got a 6 year old phone too! And 6 broken displays "that I might someday need". Besides, who needs more than 3 gigs of RAM? I miss the security updates, tho. And Slack, starting from tomorrow.

    Regarding the banking apps, it's possible to use the web interface instead. Not the best UX, but usable.

    otfrom,
    @otfrom@functional.cafe avatar

    @salakala @Edent I need my banking app to approve payments

    salakala,
    @salakala@hostux.social avatar

    @otfrom @Edent I'm sorry, I did not know.

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @salakala @otfrom
    Yes, most banking apps do push-notifications, transaction approval and rejection, biometric authentication etc.
    Some even do NFC payments and/or card verification.
    If all I wanted was viewing transactions, mobile web would be fine.

    salakala,
    @salakala@hostux.social avatar

    @Edent @otfrom The more you know. In my hyperlocality the banking apps can use different authN path, Smart-ID (https://www.smart-id.com/download/). /Should/ work on rooted device.

    otfrom,
    @otfrom@functional.cafe avatar

    @salakala @Edent no worries. It would be a good idea. Banks are evil. What are ya gonna do?

    salakala,
    @salakala@hostux.social avatar

    @otfrom @Edent in regards of phone, will see how the spares become rarer and vintage-y. With Fairphone's repairability comes the price hike for spares. On the software side I'll have to pray. Oh, wait, that was a rhetorical question...

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @salakala @otfrom
    There are a ton of spare parts for Fairphones on eBay. And if that fails there are loads of complete phones in 2nd hand shops which can be broken for parts.

    @Edent I would have read the article, but was a bit taken a back by this policy. A new level of cookie wall, a cookie paywall!

    Edent,

    @eddie meh. I have an ad-blocker and cookie blocker. So I just accept everything.

    @Edent Hmm. Good idea! searches for cookie blocker

    kraftner,
    @kraftner@mastodon.social avatar

    @Edent If only there was @GrapheneOS support for it it would be perfect. But until there is a trustworthy OS I'm afraid I'll still have to prioritize privacy here. 😐

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @kraftner I don't really understand why you're telling me that. I don't work for Fairphone and can't do anything about their OS.

    kraftner,
    @kraftner@mastodon.social avatar

    @Edent Sorry, you're absolutely right. 😶 What I somewhat clumsily tried to say is that I share your enthusiasm for the Fairphone. But only on the hardware side of things. But apart from that I also think it probably will be/is the best available option.
    So basically a +1 with an asterisk.

    chrstph,

    @Edent hope they were able to reduce the size of the former bricks fp3 and fp4.

    steve,
    @steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

    @Edent I'm relatively pleased with my 4, although it is quite a bit bigger and heavier than I would like. Disappointed that over a year after Android 13 was released, its not available for FP4 though, so it remains to be seen what "8 years software support" means for FP5. Also a bit disappointed that rooting my FP4 breaks OTA updates (disabling OTA on rooted phones is a standard Android thing, but I had hoped that it didn't apply to the Fairphone).

    @steve @Edent
    If the rumors are right they are using a Qualcomm chip meant for industrial/automotive/embedded systems. Basically it will get longer support from Qualcomm making it a lot easier to support it for a longer period, since Qualcomm will do the heavy lifting.

    aligyie,
    @aligyie@digitalcourage.social avatar

    @Edent nice! Let's see when I need a new phone. My Fairphone 2 is still working 😎

    cowbutt,

    @Edent I've only ever had two smartphones which might have been considered "flagship" in their day - the Samsung Galaxy S2 (terrible hardware and firmware, replaced after 18m), and Nokia 8 (disappointing firmware, only one to need repairs which were shoddy and took weeks between UK and Hungary).
    2010 HTC Hero (contract)
    2012 SGS2 (contract)
    2013 Moto G (SIM-free)
    2015 Moto G3 (SIM-free)
    2018 Nokia 8 (SIM-free)
    2021 Samsung M51 (SIM-free)

    I aim for mid-range, about £300, with 4y+ of updates now.

    m,
    @m@martinh.net avatar

    @Edent You too can be the cool kid at the party without taking out a second mortgage by getting a second hand Surface Duo for about £300 on eBay :dragncoolmlem:

    Caveat: 2/10 for repairability on iFixit. You'd probably just break it more if you tried to take it apart :disappointedcat:

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Microsoft+Surface+Duo+Teardown/136576

    Bonus: Now dual boots Windows and Android. UEFI support probably means Linux isn't too far off either, for the really cool kids... :blobfoxhyper2:

    https://github.com/WOA-Project/SurfaceDuo-Guides/blob/main/InstallWindows/InstallWindows-SurfaceDuo2.md

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @m I could also get two iPhones and sellotape them together 😂
    It's a cool design, but not quite satisfying my tech-lust.

    m,
    @m@martinh.net avatar

    @Edent The genius of the Duo is that it's essentially a dual screen Android, rather than a single large (folding) screen as per Pixel Fold etc.

    So the two screens work perfectly well independently (great if you have ADHD - two thumb scrolling!) and apps don't do weird scaling things.

    But... as they share an OS, things like keyboard entry and copy/paste work really well.

    Admittedly when you go full (dual) screen the large gap between the two physical screens tends to get in the way!

    @Edent For 90% of adults, a Redmi Note 12 for 180 euro is more than enough. I say adults because today’s teenagers would probably start a hunger strike if they didn’t get an iPhone.

    @ianbetteridge I'm pleased I'm not the only one thinking that!
    Looks like FairPhone5 is being announced at the end of this month.

    pre,

    @Edent I do not believe a foldable screen will last six years, no.

    Not a chance.

    It might last two if you're careful and don't unfold it too much.

    They do look cool though, until they break.

    Wifiwits,

    @Edent I’ve yet to see a folding screen phone in the wild that hasn’t already broken.

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @Wifiwits I've seen a lot of poorly applied screen protectors on them. And some very chunky cases.

    ben,
    @ben@hardill.me.uk avatar

    @Edent @Wifiwits most of the screen protectors are probably actually part of the screen.

    When the first batch went out for review all the testers peeled them off and instantly broken the screen.

    @Edent but have you considered going in the other direction and getting a feature phone?

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @mensrea I have a lovely little Nokia 1100 for those times I need to make a 2G call.

    Which feature phone do you use?

    mensrea,
    @mensrea@freeradical.zone avatar

    @Edent currently on quite an old android (ulefone armor x5) but looking at something like the nokia 800 tough for when this one dies
