I spend an unreasonable amount of time making sure my blog renders well even if CSS isn't loaded.

Whether it's a dodgy Internet connection, a text-only browser, or something else - it's nice knowing that my blog is in a logical order and perfectly usable without decorations.

So fire up Lynx or w3m and take a look at your site. What do you need to change?

eddie,
@eddie@coldrick.me.uk avatar

@Edent This is a good idea. I have seen many a site loaded without CSS; usually blocked external CDN/asset server domain, files missing. It's always a nightmare to navigate. Non CSS reliant browsing would be nice. I will look at my own sites :)

This is clever - a dynamo battery which works on London's locked & docked publics bikes.

https://www.dezeen.com/2023/09/29/mypowerbank-hacks-santander-bikes-homeless-charge-phones/

(Yes, yes, obviously the real solution to homelessness is structural. But I think this is a nifty way to look askew at urban infrastructure.)

eddie,
@eddie@coldrick.me.uk avatar

@Edent This is really cool. At first I thought by 'hacking' they were gonna be literally stealing power from the bikes or charging stations somehow. Didn't expect an actual fixed bike chain charging solution! Very clever.

    @SecurityWriter I work a 10 minute drive away from my house. It takes 50-60 minutes on tram (reliable, but takes long time), 40-50 minutes on bus (constantly late/cancelled). Only reliable and quick alternative to car is bike, which takes 20-30 minutes. I do try and bike when I can; also almost get killed every time by people trying to save 10 seconds. When I was younger, I figured I would never have to use a car. Until I had to use the rubbish public transport. Anyway, I am learning to drive. 😅

    Looks like the cheapest at the moment is .ru / .рф

    Not entirely sure it's a sensible idea to buy one though…

    eddie,
    @eddie@coldrick.me.uk avatar

    @Edent Made the mistake of registering a .ru just (2 weeks exactly) before they invaded and started the war. Best yet, it was for a domain hack for a site I was helping a classmate from Ukraine build.🤦‍♂️ Getting reminder emails in Russian from a state affiliated registry is quite scary! Let's just say I quickly used a different domain and tried to delete the domain - you need to send the registry your passport as proof of ownership. Just let it expire. Reminder to me to think before I register!

    Urgent, boosts appreciated: My web host, Heart Internet, is imploding (I found this out AFTER I'd paid them for a year's worth of dedicated server up front) and I need recommendations for a company doing dedicated servers. Please, PLEASE only tell me about companies that you personally have used and have positive firsthand experience with, please don't just google this for me.

    EDIT: I'm going with Hetzner, thanks to your recommendations and the recommendations of folk I know IRL and was able to chat with face-to-face, thanks everyone for boosting this so widely and giving me so many excellent recs, there's no need to boost this post any more, you are all wonderful

    EDIT 2: folk asking how I know Heart's winding up, check out the TrustPilot reviews from mid-August on, you gotta read between the lines a bit but the takeaway is a) they're doing the "whoops we're experiencing unusually high volume of support requests" thing, b) at least one support team member is going "Screw it, here's how to transfer your domains to someone else." I assume that's why y'all are still boosting this lol

    EDIT 3: maybe y'all are still boosting this because the "I'm asking for firsthand experience pls don't just google it for me" bit is Resonating with you, I want to let you know that it annoys me as much as it annoys you. A fun game to play when someone does that is to ask them how they know, and when they say google, pretend not to know what that is and ask them to explain it

    eddie,
    @eddie@coldrick.me.uk avatar

    @ifixcoinops I have used Contabo since around 2020 now for VPSes. They also have dedicated servers. I can only speak highly of their support, who are very nice and you are always through to someone technical when needed (no faffing with a team that comes before technical or something like that).

    @SecurityWriter We have 500Mbps with Brsk (who are great btw.. I have had 0 downtime, while I probably had to restart our Virgin router every fortnight). I was downloading a VST from EastWest Sounds. Figured it would be blazingly fast. Well, it turns out EastWest evidently don't have the fastest servers 🤦‍♂️

    eddie,
    @eddie@coldrick.me.uk avatar

    @SecurityWriter In the North West, Virgin has had the majority of the market for a while. They evidently did roads at a time with their equipment, so many roads are Virgin-only unless one person pays themselves for new BT equipment for the road. Brsk have been the first real contender because they use their own fibre to the door equipment and have targeted all the roads where Virgin are the only providers. Plus they pay for your installation. I am just hoping they will venture out to telly!

    Does anyone know of a commonly used Chrome/ium extension which would set expect-ct on web pages?
    We're getting several million deprecation reports on our web pages for expect-ct but we don't set it ourselves.
    Weird.

    eddie,
    @eddie@coldrick.me.uk avatar

    @tdp_org I have seen that people complain that Cloudflare seems to add it to requests. Can it do that through DNS, perhaps it's people using 1.1.1.1?

    eddie,
    @eddie@coldrick.me.uk avatar

    @slink @tdp_org Yeah, I figured it wouldn't be able to change headers, but thought I'd check. Mind you, of course it can't, as DNS only returns the IP for you to make the request, not make the requests for you. Thanks! :) I think most of the complaints about Cloudflare adding it are from a website hosting perspective, not adding it to requests via the user.

    So I looked at their homepage.

    I know that the cobbler's children are the worst shod - but come on!

    eddie,
    @eddie@coldrick.me.uk avatar

    @Edent Those emails are the worst. Along with the SEO people who can get my site to the top ranking (that it's already at!), app developers and companies that can get me a list of attendees to a trade show I don't care about. 🙄🤣 I have recently moved email provider to Purelymail so I am hoping their system will be a bit more proactive at blocking those, and I now have an automatic reply telling people that those types of emails will be ignored in the hope they remove me from the lists.
