Had an emergency this weekend (all is fine) that required me to cycle back and forth between loads of places and let me tell you, there is no music better suited to helping you stay positive while you tear through London than punk covers of Disney songs.

Great. After a couple of years of using the Starling Bank app with @GrapheneOS with zero issues, I received a warning today that "your device hasn't passed our security checks"

13 days to factory restore to stock Android, apparently, or I won't be able to use the app on this device.

Anyone else have this issue? I haven't ever been able to use Google Wallet with bank cards on but that hasn't been a problem.

tom,
@tom@social.huginn.uk avatar

@dajb @GrapheneOS Have you relocked the bootloader?

Whilst not exactly like your situation, I was running /e/ and some banking apps didn't work because bootloader was still unlocked. When I switched to CalyxOS, I locked bootloader again after flashing and those same bank apps worked.

@GrapheneOS @dajb Feel like I got OS shamed a bit there!

1984, the classic book from George Orwell, has been on my to read list for many years. I finally got around to reading it.

@joel Dune isn't a self contained novel!

*Hunters of Dune is missing, as it's currently in use.

tom,
@tom@social.huginn.uk avatar

@joel Couldn't that be said of a lot of series?

tom,
@tom@social.huginn.uk avatar

@joel I guess it depends how mucb of the story arc you want to leave untouched. Lord of the Rings would be fairly incomplete without Two Towers or Return of the King.

I was going to stop reading Dune after Chapterhouse, as that was the last book Frank Herbert wrote. However, he left such a cliffhanger I had to get Hunters and Sandworms to finish the story arc.

Any recommendations for things to binge watch?

Disclaimer: I watch a LOT of movies and TV shows and I've pretty much seen everything, but I’m hoping that by crowdsourcing I can find out about something I somehow missed.

@Alice Bodies is a British time travel murder solving series. It's quite short and has a satisfying ending.

I recall an art project where a guy made realistic renders of bike drawing that people had drawn from memory. Results were pretty fun!

Looks like Firefly III is featured on Hacker News again!

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39392428

tom,
@tom@social.huginn.uk avatar

@ff3 I really want to like Firefly - what I think you have created is really impressive. But I REALLY struggle that all inbound money is "income". I can understand excluding liabilities and the way that assets are normally accounted for.

Why did you choose to have all inbound cash as income?

tom,
@tom@social.huginn.uk avatar

@ff3 It's an emotional struggle.

So, I buy.my food shopping online. I get charged £100 before they pick the shopping. They could get something, so I get refunded £2 a couple of days later. Unless I'm mistaken, Firefly gets me to record that as £2 groceries income and £100 groceries expenses. Now I could use a category for that, but then I don't know what the purpose of an account it.

I suppose I'm interesed in the design choice of income or expense only accounts.

I run my own Mastodon server, so hadn't really felt the need for domain blocking. However, the whole Threads stuff got me looking into it.

I feel that there is a quite a bit of risk in using aggregated block lists. Given that the sources seem to be only a handful of instances, it feels that one could easily over block using these lists.

Boring / question: can I disconnect this bathroom fan and make it safe just by removing the fuse from the switch box?

Or do I need to fully disconnect it from the ceiling rose, where it draws its power?

OR is it more complicated than either of those?

I'm nervous of DIY electrics, but also broke - would rather not have to call a sparky for something this trivial. But I will if this is more complex than I think.

[Don't answer unless you genuinely know please]

tom,
@tom@social.huginn.uk avatar

@girlonthenet Are you looking to replace the fan, or something else?

Like are you just going to have exposed wires that you're looking to make safe?

I've realised that the three things I use for on are:

🚫 Ad blocking. Which I guess I could do with a VPN based blockers?
📲 Call recording. Google have killed that off entirely, only available in custom ROMS.
🔄 Swapping the bottom buttons to be ⏹️ 🔘 ◀️. My neuroplasticity can't cope with the "wrong" way.

Which pretty much means I need .

But that means:
💳 No Google Pay.
🏦 Most banking apps don't work.

Wondering if the detriments of a new phone outweigh the benefits?

tom,
@tom@social.huginn.uk avatar

@Edent I use CalyxOS with four different banking apps. I think that the trigger for them working was relocking the bootloader. That being said Natwest, Nationwide, and Lloyds worked with unlocked bootloader. Tide was the fussy one.

For Ad blocking , what is it that you get from being root?

I like the idea of solar panels, however, looking at the financials they do seem to fall into the "lifestyle" rather than "make money" category of investment.

They don't seem particularly competetive against, say, an ISA. Or pension contribution. They seem especially vulnerable if you're likely to move house in within 15 years of installation.

Unless I'm missing something...

tom,
@tom@social.huginn.uk avatar

@ben I suppose whilst I like the idea of solar panels, I like the idea of having cash more. Like, if I lose my job, solar panels are not exactly a liquid asset.

It's just a shame that they're not incetivized more.

tom,
@tom@social.huginn.uk avatar

@ben Might have a look at that. Thanks!

tom,

So, Apache or Nginx? I'm thinking about merging my flask and static site server with my Mastodon server. The masto server uses Nginx, other server used Apache.

I'm more familiar with Apache, and not sure that I can be arsed to learn Nginx. But I'm not sure that I can be arsed rewriting it all either....
