schwim, in Sync for Lemmy is now live for everyone to try

For those offended by subscription for ad-free experience and data collection, consider Connect for Lemmy. No data collection and no pay-to-browse scheme.

Connect is a good app, but it just isn’t as polished as Sync yet. I will stick with Connect for the time being though.

twistedtxb,

I sincerely don’t know why would someone downvote your comment.

random_prime,

Thank you. I’ll donate. Would you consider making it open source? I used to be a fan of Sync and had their one time payment for ultra version. But this current release is subscription only and I don’t want to any subscription. Again thank you. The app is great so far.

One time remove ad and lifetime ultra were added this evening into sync.

SpaceNoodle,

People are willing to pay for a better experience.

Izzy,
@Izzy@lemmy.world avatar

I think you are missing the problem here. Paying for a good product or extra features is one thing. Paying to remove the ads that you added in the first place is another. Lemmy is funded entirely by donations and doesn’t have any ads.

It’s a pretty bad look that is fundamentally against the goals of Lemmy as ad free an open platform with a free API. Otherwise we are going to go down the same rabbit hole again and again like what happened with Reddit.

Stumblinbear,
@Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

Lemmy choosing not to serve ads doesn’t mean nobody else is allowed to. I have no issues with Sync serving ads at all. Heck, I wouldn’t even care if Lemmy served them. People have a right to be paid a reasonable amount for their effort

QHC,
QHC avatar

This is more relevant for Lemmy than client apps, but the problem with relying on ads is that you then become beholden to the ad-buyers.

I think that can be mitigated by operating as a non-profit that is not seeking to launch a multi-billion IPO at some point in the future, however. Decentralization is the answer to the "growth problem" that the last decade of failed tech investments has constantly run into.

Stumblinbear,
@Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

Depends on what you mean by beholden to them. Unless you’re partnering directly with certain ad providers it’s pretty much plug-and-play: you can just choose to not optimize for serving ads.

Izzy,
@Izzy@lemmy.world avatar

Part of the purpose of moving from Reddit to Lemmy is that a for profit corporation making money off of the free content of users was considered bad. I might even say this was the main point of contention and thought that spawned the creation of Lemmy. A free open platform where the users are more in control of their own content. Adding ads back into the mix means that somebody is profiting again off of the free content of the users. On principal this goes against the purpose of Lemmy. You may as well just use Reddit as the end goal of monetizing the fediverse is basically going to end up the same.

So for Sync to not be against the spirit of Lemmy it would need to remove its free version with ads so that the only thing you are paying for is the app itself and not for the content without ads.

Stumblinbear,
@Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

Just don’t use the app. This isn’t rocket science.

can,

Sync is still just one guy so it’s not some mega corp. I don’t like ad monetization model either but with the few apps I use regularly I’ll pay to remove.

ahal,

I’m getting tired of people telling me what Lemmy is supposed to be about.

Every individual instance has their own goals that are completely independent from the core Lemmy project. If the creators of Lemmy don’t like that they shouldn’t have made it open source.

FuckSpez,

This exactly

zik,

The ads/subscription support the developer, who works on this as his full time job. This means we get a better app.

Izzy,
@Izzy@lemmy.world avatar

So you are ok with ads and paid subscriptions to remove them, but you aren’t ok with Reddit charging for access to its API? How do you reconcile the contradiction here? Reddit developers have to eat too. They are just a business trying to make money. What if Lemmy instances started charging for its API and priced out third party apps then added ads/subscription to their own app? All just part of the cycle?

zik,

I’m fine with paying for a service I like and I did subscribe to reddit for many years. But even though I was a subscriber they cut off access to my apps. So screw them.

I understand that nothing’s free so I plan to donate to lemmy.world to help them with their costs.

ahal,

There’s no contradiction. It’s just a free market. Reddit charged an absurd amount for their API and offered an inferior product as the only alternative. So people left.

If a Lemmy instance wants to charge for access or serve ads, that’s fine too. But they better have some competitive advantage or people will leave for an instance that doesn’t do that.

Another difference between Reddit and Sync is the scale. I support my local coffee shop over Starbucks for the same reason.

Funny how no one expects a coffee shop to run on donations.

Black_Gulaman,

Yeah, connect is good, I’m using it right now. Wish it could be open source though.

vox,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

don’t like the excessive padding and lack of stuff everywhere tho, feels so empty.

tatochipcookie,

I’m okay with paying the subscription fee. I purchased Sync for Reddit Ultra back in the day with a one time payment and that was great, but it was one of the most supported apps I have ever bought in all my years of using computers and phones. For several years, I got a well supported app, and I felt like I got a steal of a purchase. I don’t feel that the annual fee for Sync forLemmy is a cash grab by LJDawson, especially if the app just keeps getting better and better. It’s already the most polished Lemmy client out now.

bxyrk, in newpipe.net removed from Google search results due to DMCA take down request

Of course I went and redownloaded newpipe because I was reminded of it’s existence lol. It’s been a pretty good option for a while now. I mean I DO have YouTube premium and almost always use YouTube music for listening to streaming music, but the extreme ease of downloading is always a plus. A lot of the content creators I follow I like to give their videos traffic, but for a download on mobile, works great

It’s a third party Reddit app for Android. One of the many that are getting killed off by the API changes. A lot of people liked it because it has a much better UI than the official Reddit app and I’m sure plenty of people will love getting to bring the same experience over to Lemmy now.

I’m admittedly jealous. I’d love if Apollo pivoted to Lemmy as well but I don’t blame Christian at all for taking a step away from things after becoming the face of the 3PA developers in this entire debacle. Hopefully at least one of the several iOS Lemmy apps currently in-development can provide something familiar.

Oh great, thank you.
I don't know why, but with the amount of craze sync for lemmy was generating, I couldn't wrap my head around it just being one of the third party apps. Im really happy for all the Sync users that get to move here and keep their preferred app, but you would think there was a pizza giveaway or something with the amount of posts there are about it.

atocci,

The loss of third-party apps is the reason most of us are here. Makes sense that people are a bit excited that one of the favorites is following us here too haha.

Kyle,

You're right that is weird. I think most sync users including me find it to be far superior any Reddit experience, better than RES, and all the other apps or web interfaces.

I couldn't stand Reddit in any other form after trying sync.

One thing I'm really missing is that once I've read a post, it can be hidden in sync so I'm only seeing new content. I'm having to re-read so many posts in Lemmy right now and just want to move on to new things!

trainwreck, in Turn your Android tablet into an IDE with VSCode and Nix

To my knowledge, there is no way to compile android apps on android, which is the type of development I want to do. If you can figure that out (assuming you have any interest in that) I would be ecstatic. Probably would require using nix’s cross-compilation options.

original_reader, in Overmorrow

Installed it. Liking it. Indeed beautifully designed.

There’s a lot going on and much data to be seen. Nice! Not airways easy to quickly see what I am looking for, but that might be just me not being used to it. Has a bit to catch up to meet the features of Breezy Weather, but I don’t expect that from a new so and you have SO much potential here!

Am I missing the dew point or is that not implemented yet?

The animations might be a tad slow, though beautiful to look at.

Can’t say much more. Will use Overmorrow (fantastic name!) for sure to test it more and see where it goes.

Thank you. Awesome job!

bloubz, in Overmorrow

I have been using Breezy Weather but this looks good as well

limerod, in Why aren't apps updating in the background?

Your phone needs to be connected to WiFi or data(depending on your settings) and needs to be idle and charging. Playstore will slowly auto update your apps as long as your phone is not too hot for auto-updates. This process takes a long time.

Max_P, in Is there any permanent risk to the phone itself if you install graphene OS?
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

As for the iPhone 3G, I think it was just software and an aging device. My iPod definitely got pretty laggy with multiple apps open on a device with 128MB of RAM in an OS that doesn’t even support running apps in the background. The more mods and plugins loaded the laggier naturally.

But even with a jailbreak, they didn’t mod drivers or anything that would make it different from a hardware perspective. They just sideload a store that can then install any apps. You can install bad apps but nothing that would survive a restore in iTunes.

What could have happened is she got an iOS update after the restore that also was a bit laggier and energy intensive. Or maybe the faster discharge and higher energy consumption is what finished an already aging battery. It’s very unlikely the jailbreak caused it, more likely triggered it or expedited an existing problem. Like formatting your mom’s PC whose hard drive is on death’s bed and the IO of reinstalling an OS makes it kick the bucket. Is it the OS’s fault? No. But did installing the OS cause the fault? Yes. People will still blame the OS, especially if it’s a different OS in case of a jailbreak or putting Linux on your mom’s laptop that’s still on XP or 7. The new thing, it broke the thing!

Jimmycrackcrack, (edited )

It was brand new at the time come to think of it, it wasn’t released until 2008 so this more likely happened in 2009. The timing and the dramatic difference from stock to jailbroken is just too striking to have been a coincidence, although you might be alleviating some 15-16 year old guilt, that perhaps it triggered something. Still very worrying that a new and very expensive phone was triggered in to dysfunction from the process but maybe it was unlucky defective model. I definitely think that while it was jailbroken the problems were as a result of the OS but maybe the Cydia apps or something else were particularly draining and then that fast draining cycle triggered something else physically.

Max_P, (edited )
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

Yeah if it was brand new, it might also have been defective, I’ve seen that happen. It’s just between jailbreak and manufacturing defect, which do we default to? Depends on the whole timeline really.

It’s not impossible it broke it, but anyway the Pixel is made for that so it’s a lot less sketchy to begin with. It’s the same risk as installing an OS on a PC really.

Google releases betas and developer previews for the Pixel, it’s made to survive buggy code.

Max_P, (edited ) in Is there any permanent risk to the phone itself if you install graphene OS?
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

Pixel phones are basically the gold standard of Android phones for flashing custom ROMs. Google doesn’t lock anything down and provide everything necessary to not only build your own, but it even fully supports relocking the bootloader with your own keys and all the secure boot security features.

In most cases I think Google has an online tool you can run right from the browser to fully reflash the stock OS on it.

The only thing that won’t work is apps using Play Integrity which some bank apps and streaming apps use for DRM, including Google Pay/Wallet. There’s not much you can do about it especially in the longer term, as this is hardware-backed so unless some major exploit gets dropped, you can’t really fake the phone being stock to apps. Reverting to stock should bring back full functionality.

You really have to go out of your way to brick a Pixel and mess with overclocking to do permanent hardware damage.

Have fun!

Jimmycrackcrack,

This is mostly sounding reassuring. My wanted banking app is on a list of apps that people have successfully used on Graphene OS so it’s probably ok, but yeh, definitely want to be able to go back. I guess I don’t know what answer I’m looking for, but in the anecdote I started this post with, I was amazed that it was somehow possible for changes to somehow survive a re-flashing to stock. I really, really don’t want that to happen.

Max_P,
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

I just replied to that in a dedicated comment. But for your Pixel it’s even better because it’s something that Google even officially endorses, it doesn’t even void your warranty.

I’ve been modding phones since the Android 2.2 days, and I’ve never had any major issues or anything that would make me want to go back to stock, and never had issues going back to stock. Even my S7 with a modded bootloader splash screen, it was gone when I flashed stock back on it.
