I think the "old internet" aspect is for sure one of the coolest things about it.
For me, nothing has ever really topped the feeling of the online forums of 20 years ago, often hosted by small groups of enthusiasts. The fediverse can bring back this smaller version of the internet: a series of islands each with their niche, but this time around connected by bridges making it seamless to travel between them.
