The activity spike is subsiding, but I’m still finding more than enough to engage with. When I don’t, I switch over to posting the content I want to see more of.

The fediverse doesn’t have advertising, it’s 100% word of mouth, and that isn’t at critical mass yet. People who stuck with reddit aren’t hearing about it anymore, as those of us who are getting behind the fediverse are no longer there to tell them about it.

But mainstream social media will fuck up again. And every time more and more people will end up on the fediverse. Each time, the fediverse gets more and more users, meaning it becomes more and more appealing for the next wave to stick around.

It’s slow, but unless commercial social media makes some significant changes in how it treats its users, the change will only pick up speed. But it will take years, yet.

WarmSoda,

I’m on here way too much and haven’t noticed any decline other than right after the huge influx from Reddit.

Generally if you have to ask something as hyperbolic as is it dying then it isn’t. Sub to more comms. Scroll through All.

I don't use any Lemmy instance any more, seeing as how I couldn't make myself ok with having named that fediverse constellation after a man who owned the largest personal collection of Nazi memorabilia in the world.

I've been using KBIN, and even though it's founder and main coder put out an update last week as to why maintenance and development of KBIN has been slow to the point of seeming as if it's stopped all together, it still bothers me that I can't block a domain (without losing the ability to see posts comments .... it's a known bug) and I can't block sub/magazines/whatever from places like lemmyworld and hexbear (amongst others), can't drill down on my own comments under my profile to see replies, and notifications though racking up, and showing the increasing number, can't be accessed at all only showing the error we're working on it page (this has gone on for a month now).

So, yeah, it's becoming less interesting the longer these issues aren't addressed, and there are far too many children running around the fediverse (god help us when the idiot right wingers figure out how to onboard) without the ability to block at will.

Hey, it's all free, and the developers are all doing this gratis, out of the goodness of their hearts, and I appreciate that, I needed an excuse to shitcan reddit, as things are much much worse there, by design for engagement, just not in love with KBIN, and I guess that could change once it becomes more functional.

Lodespawn,

I don't see any of the notification problems, I assume you've tried logging out and logging back in again? Closing any kbin tabs and restarting your browser? Checked if disabling your adblocker for the site makes a difference?

One good news about the Notifications issue is that it only affects the single "page" of the comment that caused it (I think when a mod on another instance removes a post thus different parts of Kbin "see" it - the notification counter - while other parts cannot see it hence it crashes itself). But when enough other notifications rack up that are not affected, it falls behind to page 2 and you can begin using notifications again.

Until it happens again with a new content and the cycle repeats. But my notifications are now permanently stuck at just 1 (or more but that 1 at least can never be removed) and I can use my notifications again... for now.

You can follow KBIN magazines and Lemmy Communities from Friendica (they show as what they call "Friendica Forums") and you can do as you can block domain without loosing comments, block particular instances and or users (they still consider "forums" to be users, to simplify all the joining, subscribing, friending thing), and you can drill down on your own comments under your profile to see replies (I think you have to change a setting to see your replies in your default profile view) It's probably worth checking out https://friendica.fediverse.observer/

Jagermo,

You get out what you put in.

Nearly everday I see a post with over 1000 upvotes. For such a niche platform I would say it is very populated and active. I enjoy the population lemmy is at. I can recognize posters on lemmy. It reminds me of reddit when it was first getting popular

Maybe it’s what you are subscribed to? If anything I see an increase in content

Which active communities are you subscribed to? I could definitely use some suggestions.

Memes@lemmy.ml

Both piracy communities

Gaming, technology, jokes and humor @beehaw

Worldnews@lemmy.world

A bunch from Mander.xyz, the science based instance

Apollo2323,

Yes I agree I have seen more content and more interaction.

Seems reddit is being overun by bots. It's just a matter of time before it drives more users away. The reddit brass wants more bots so it looks likes more users are using the site so it makes their IPO juicier.

timicin,

it's not dying but each instance eventually engages in a de-federation war with each other on idealogical ground making each instance seem emptier because their already lacking content is now lacking even more from the de-federated instances.

ieightpi,

Nope it’s not. Seems fine to me. Indeed plenty of content. Someone said you might be subscribed to smaller communities

Donger,

Yeah I think everyone is getting tired of seeing reposts and people talking about how they left Reddit.

mke_geek,

It’s unfortunate that the child porn has started to creep in.

shinigamiookamiryuu,

Invite people. Sometimes that’s all it takes.

sndrtj,

Well my instance was defederated from lemmy.world last week - now restored - and that certainly was a lot less content. Otoh, I found some new communities in the meantime that previously got swamped out by lemmy.world content.

Maybe people should not use the defederation option so quickly. Try to find an amicable solution first.

PseudoSpock,
@PseudoSpock@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Depends on what the defederation was for.

What is “dying” and what are you looking for? It isn’t even fully born yet. Help nurture it instead of contributing to the duplicate posts of the same question every few days.
