OC r/GlobalOffensive's stance on the current situation

As you have probably noticed, r/GlobalOffensive is still private in protest, due to Reddit's recent API changes, which you can read more about in the link:

Due to the lack of meaningful change, we will remain private for the time being. We will re-evaluate our stance on the 19th of June and will keep you updated in the relevant channels, as we go along with this extension.

Good. The only way this was ever going to have an effect is if it lasted longer than two days. Even a week might not be enough.

We need to scare advertisers by the lack of content so Reddit starts losing revenue and ends up having to act (which is already starting to happen by the way).

I'm beyond glad to see subs take a stand of indefinite (or prolonged) darkness. Maybe Spaz will give up the "it'll blow over" stance when subs just don't come back after continued evaluation.

If you guys feel so strongly that reddit is out to get you, open the community and resign all your mod positions. If your position and "work" has so much impact we'll see it first hand on the subreddit when it is unmoderated.

I'm fairly confident we are going back to reddit on 19th June. The lack of community here really hurts, only 500+subscribers so far.

There is already a replacement subreddit for csgo and it has over 500k+ members. We should go back and take back our place as the main CSGO discussion subreddit. Either we are very sure the community here will grow or we will lose everything we built so far.

If the mods end up having to compromise and reopen, they can still foster a gradual shift away from Reddit by enforcing images/videos are put on third party services like imgur and not kept inside reddit itself, the walled garden. This way smaller, external communities can share and enjoy the same content in their own bubbles and hopefully some will flourish on their own.

I think the reddit blackout is good, I don't really like reddit as a website/company and if a lot of people feel strongly about it then I support it.

The problem is that unless you properly reroute the audience now, they will be gone forever. The reason why the CS kbin is so empty and slow is because I bet most people on the sub have no idea it exists. In order to find it, you need to go to the subreddit, read through a generic "reddit's api changes are bad" paragraph that everyone's seen a lot this month through to the end in order to even see the link. On new.reddit.com the kbin link is actually hidden behind a "read more" button. I bet loads of people have gone to the sub, seen a generic "We're still closed because..." message, and just clicked away without even seeing the kbin link.

Please make the link more prominent. Maybe reopen the sub but don't accept new posts, and pin a message saying "go to kbin for now". If you don't reroute them here then the audience will just go somewhere else and the kbin will die along with the subreddit.

Look, the only way this protest is gonna get anywhere is if there's a legit ALTERNATIVE to Reddit. Let's face it.

Discord? Come on, it's a hot mess for browsing content. It's way too easy to miss stuff from other channels. Reddit makes it a breeze to find this content cause you can just upload clips/gameplay or a content piece.

And good luck trying to navigate Discord to upload these clips. There's no upvote incentive, so why bother? So no, Discord ain't a replacement for Reddit. All this blackout on the sub is doing is cutting down on the CS2 chatter, and that ain't good for the game.

And don't even get me started on Kbin. It's an even worse alternative to Reddit than Discord, if you can believe it. So, no, Kbin ain't the answer either. We gotta do better, period.

But kbin (or lemmy) are fine for replacing reddit, as they have the same general format.

Because it isn't as big as reddit yet, hence we need patience, reddit didn't get built overnight either sadly :(

Yes and no.

I agree with you that Discord is trash if you want to use it like Reddit. It's really only good for free-flowing discussions and things like that.

But when it comes to the basics of link aggregation and commenting, Kbin (and Lemmy) is exactly like Reddit. The only things it's missing is like 15 years' worth of UI and UX polish that Reddit has done and a lot of the content (well, and better moderation tools, but that's not really relevant for me as an end user). Those can be fixed within months or years at most if we keep going at this development speed. So I'll be staying here at least for now, and when my third party Reddit app no longer works, I'll almost stop going there. And I don't think I'm the only one.

The only negatives of Kbin/Lemmy are the whole federation aspect, where you have multiple sites that communicate with each other, which can cause chaos if these decide to defederate (= basically stop sharing content). But the more I think about it, that is where the internet is headed. Big services are and always will be in a cycle of enshittification and the only way to fix that is to build something ourselves. Federation helps a lot with that, since everyone with a server can create a community and the users can join one they like and get content from the entire network.

Open the subreddit with limited discussions. Side by side develop this platform. You have an audience base of 1M, why waste it. Instead, reroute them creatively.

I think the reason many people are ending up here is exactly because of its similarity to reddit. Most of the issues with kbin can be easily fixed as well.

I still try to figure out the appeal of kbin as a Fediverse front-end. I'm accessing this community though lemmy.world and not kbin.social because I can't even figure out how to only display posts from my subscribed communities (or "magazines") on the front page.
