An apt-cacher-ng host or some other APT proxy/mirror that sits on your corporate network and whose logs are chomped by a clever analyzer that feeds the information of which packages/versions have been downloaded by which clients into a database ... that has to have been invented in the last 20 years. Someone got a pointer for me?

@xahteiwi ran one back in 64kbps isdn times. Installations took forever otherways.
Nowadays it would require you to block other apt sources. Or most machines would by default not use the apt proxy.
Is the idea to see what machines are not patched by looking at the logs? Or what?

@sep The idea is to have a simple (for users), non-intrusive way to know which packages and versions are installed where, so you know how much of an emergency the latest zero-day is.

And to say "everyone please drop this one file into your apt.conf.d" seems simple enough for desktop Linux users.

@xahteiwi At work we use debmirror to mirror a repository, then you could just parse the webserver access log to get the packages and ips

@kunsi Thank you for restating my problem; have you got a solution? 🙂

@xahteiwi popularity-contest with a changed reporting endpoint?

@xurizaemon I'd quite like timestamps of when a client last ran apt update and upgrade. A proxy would know that; a popcon endpoint wouldn't (I think).

@xahteiwi not the same thing but if you want to manage updates https://www.uyuni-project.org/ its a fork of spacewalk but it uses salt, took them a while to add Debian 12 support but the latest versions do support it

@Dragon No I'm absolutely not looking for something like that; I want it to rely on nothing but an APT config option on the client.

(Boosts would be as welcome as helpful comments, needless to say.)
