In case anyone is wondering how it's going with building those cabinet doors.. it's not. 🫠

Table saw in action

@Gina My current fight is moisture.

@chris ...that was supposed to be bent right? 😅

chris,
@chris@myprivate.social avatar

@Gina That was supposed to be a table top. Now it’s destined to be a canoe. 🤣🤣

@Gina Nothing a few more woodworking tools can’t solve…

@Gina Uhm, how did you even do a crooked cut with a table saw? 🤣

Did your fence wander around during the cut or the piece wasn't flush to the fence? It looks like MDF, so it's not any stresses in the wood being released.

I don't know this saw, if you grab either end of the fence, does it wiggle? It should be locked down tight both ends.

@yngmar i think its because I used a long board with an uneven side that I had to halfway through adjust so that it would line up with the fence again.

Aka if the side of my board was actually straight I wouldnt have to manually adjust and the rest would be straight as well.

Ans yes I did try to make the side of the board straight.

@Gina Ah, that can't work. If your workpiece doesn't have any straight side you can make one by using a known straight plank at least as long as the workpiece. Tack them together and run the straight plank along the fence, cutting the connected workpiece. Now you have a straight side on the workpiece and can run that along the fence to cut the other side too.

@yngmar I'll see tomorrow if I can do that. Hopefully the next 3 doors will turn out better 😬

@Gina This method using double-sided tape is even simpler and should work well as the MDF coating will make it easy to clean off the tape afterwards:

You just need an actually straight piece from somewhere first :)

@yngmar

Dream: "I'm going to make custom furniture with all these cool tools and joinery techniques, plus I know how to turn a table saw on so I could technically build a house."

Reality: "why are my boards not straight 🥲"

@Gina Just make it your style. Maybe these guys need some matching furniture: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krzywy_Domek

@yngmar @Gina these saws are notoriously imprecise. Your best is to go get a large carpenters square and first square up the blade to the table. Then use it to keep the fence square every time you move it.

Also sometimes the arbor inside the drive unit is either non square rotationally, or has a lot of runout (play) due to cheap bearings. There isn't much you can do about that short of swapping out the arbor or the entire saw.

@fedops @yngmar glad to hear its not just me 😅

@Gina After many years doing amateur woodworking and managing without one, I'm getting my first tablesaw tomorrow. I'm quite unfeasibly excited.

Gina,
@Gina@fosstodon.org avatar

@BonehouseWasps oooh which one are you getting??

BonehouseWasps,
@BonehouseWasps@mastodon.social avatar

@Gina nothing serious. It's a store own-brand one (Titan). But I used to work for them and had a go with one so I'm pretty confident it will be okay for me. 😊
