Really thought this latest project was going to be the one that made me subscribe to #shapr3d but realized that the parametric stuff was still in beta. Back to #fusion360 for this one.
The noise in my head would be significantly reduced if I mastered CAD. Because so far, I’m doing the Smart EV conversion battery case design solely in my head, in 2D and in a spreadsheet. Going from 2D design proficiency to 3D is surprisingly frustrating. #FreeCad makes me want to crawl up in a corner. Now trying #OnShape, #tinkercad and #Fusion360.
@RichiH@sneakinhysteria I'm not sure about that. From my understanding, one of the principles is that one is allowed to sell products based on these open files. This isn't allowed if you're using the free plan from #openshape : "For non-commercial use only." https://www.onshape.com/en/pricing
Yes, STEP is the best format to exchange CAD data between different programs.
To be honest, I'm not interesting in a detailed discussion regarding the definition of #opensource / #openhardware in this case 😉
Diving deeper into #Fusion360. My #3Dprinting project of the past few days. An overengineered holder for a razor, for a tidier bathroom. Measured every mm of every accessory for friction fit. You can download it on #Printables and on #MakerWorld. #AutoCAD#Bambulab
Wanted to share this. It's been a long road, but as of today and 11 months later, we've fully migrated from #Autodesk#Fusion360 to #FreeCAD. Every #3dprinting design that we've made in Fusion that we needed to back up has been re-made from the ground up in FreeCAD and is available on our GitHub.
Happy #MakerMonday , heres a #lasercut coffin I designed in #Fusion360 for #DND mini and dice I made for sale. Great gift for that party member who just wont stop jumping into holes they shouldn't.
Yes, the choice of rose dice are inspired by the song Kiss From A Rose by Seal, and yes, the dice are ordered from lowest to highest number of sides, everyone does this its very normal.
I ended up abandoning #OpenSCAD unfortunately. After a few days, I couldn’t recreate a component I had made in about 20 mins in #Fusion360 so decided not to fight it. 🙃 Maybe I'll give it another shot when I'm not trying to get a product out the door.
@trestrantham I haven’t really tried it yet, but I suspect I will one day when I need to build a highly parameter driven object that fusion won’t do right. I’ve used OpenSCAD many times with someone else’s design to make custom stls for things that would take forever to do in fusion. I’ve even made some heavy modifications to a few… but I’ve found it to be a little cumbersome to design in compared to fusion.
@calley@trestrantham I'm happy to help with OpenSCAD stuff if you get stuck. I've been using it for over 10 years. (I'm still far from an expert, but I know how to do things!)
I've used FreeCAD to do some minor designing for 3D printing. It works fine, but it's a bit too rigid and formal for my use cases. I don't need to constrain every single edge, face, or vertex. Blender isn't really too suited for this task, at least I didn't like it for this task.
Many seem to use Fusion 360 and it's free for personal use. AutoDesk isn't exactly a nice company, but perhaps this is a case where one can be pragmatic.
@chakie@meuon We use SolidWorks at work, and I am generally a fan of it as far as commercial software goes. I think it’s the most user-friendly, and I’ve never really had a bad experience with the company except for how they license DraftSight, which is so difficult to deal with.
As with most CAD software, it’s sometimes difficult to diagnose why someone is having a problem, because geometric conditions can be situationally specific. Keep at it with FreeCAD!!
@chakie There is also OnShape and then people praise Plasticity and Creo, but those two aren't free.
I stay with FreeCAD and OpenSCAD but I get what you are saying. Keeping each sketch really simple is the key, and this way you don't always have to constrain them completely. I usually still do as I like to share my designs, and for that I name all the meaningful constraints so that they can be changed from the model list without even opening the sketch.
A friend of mine is looking for a Fusion 360 person to do 2D and 3D design work for an exciting large-scale international puppetry project. It's on-site at a studio in west Hove (UK). If you (or someone you know) is interested, drop me a DM for more info.
I like to build my own furniture. Where possible I use Blum hinges and other items from their ecosystem, only their push to open brackets didn’t fit my needs. So, on to #Fusion360 again, make a prototype on the #BambuLab , do some adjustments and print the final product #3DPrinting . It’s nice to have the ability to make parts you otherwise couldn’t get. @3dprinting
What do you use for designing 3D models (for 3D printing)? Despite the high end hardware (M1 Max) #Fusion360 is constantly freezing up on me. #3DPrinting
@Stark9837@3dprinting I won't use corporate surveillance and subscraptionware such as anything done by autodesk, even if there is a "free" version. so the technical merits (if any) of Fusion360 are immaterial to me.
which leaves openscad which I've used a lot, though i find it frustratingly lacking in many ways.
