mate_classic,

Definitely Outer Wilds. I will never have this kind of wonder again and this is sad. Even though you can really play it only once, it is worth it.

Keep hearing about this game and i hear you dont wanna spoil yourself on it, but that also means idk if i wanna buy it or not, ill probably end up playing it at some point

YoTcA,

Read on your own risk, but I try to be as vague as possible. And I think I am not spoiling a lot, because you will learn about it in the first few minutes of the game: You are trapped in a time loop and try to find out why it is happening and who caused it. You will follow clues that lead you through the whole star system where you will visit strange worlds and try to solve the riddle, each new time loop getting close to the solution. The riddles/mysteries are really great and integrate fantastically in the world.

I would like to describe it as the perfect mixture of death loop and Myst.

YoTcA,

Outer Wilds really was a one of a time experience. Recently learned there actually is a DLC for the game. I am really looking forward to the experience and hope it comes close to the base game.

mate_classic,

The DCL is different from the base game but still extremely good. Proves to me that the game wasn't just a lucky shit by the developers. The DLC story also fills a plot ambiguity from the base story.

anji,

Playing Outer Wilds (+DLC) was an experience I will forever remember.

jenbanim,

Outer Wilds is hands down my favorite game of all time as well. Everything from the gameplay mechanics, to the music, to the exploration, to the puzzles, to the story just clicked for me. It's really rare I think to find a grand sci-fi that doesn't stumble in the last act, but the final moments of Outer Wilds and the DLC as well are just perfection

salarua,
@salarua@sopuli.xyz avatar

Outer Wilds rekindled my love for exploration. i used to explore a lot in games when i was just starting out, but my play style changed to more by-the-book because i didn't find anything rewarding by exploring in most games. and over time i forgot how to love exploration. so when i picked up Breath of the Wild, i was completely paralyzed. as soon as i got off the Great Plateau, there was no path to follow. i set it down soon after that.

i heard Outer Wilds recommended to me a lot, so i decided to try it, even though i didn't have much faith in my ability to enjoy it. but after my first few discoveries, it clicked. there are paths, so so many paths that i can follow. there was no more decision paralysis, and i went to try and follow them all. for the first time in a long time, i explored. i looked around just because. it didn't take long for me to finish the game, and it was the best experience in gaming i ever had

Clazzy,

I've been gaming for 30 years and Outer Wilds sparked something in me that I haven't felt since I first started playing games. Exploring the world felt so satisfying and rewarding, and the art style and (brilliant) music enhance it so much. I went in knowing absolutely nothing and I still think about it 3 years later. Genuinely one of the best pieces of media I've ever experienced.

honeyontoast,

Fable: The Lost Chapters is my all-time favourite game. I played this a lot when I was 13/14, and I loved every second. Had a great story, and a great sense of humour. I played the second but didn't enjoy it as much, and never tried the third.

I'm looking forward to the remake, although it sounds like it'll be quite different.

hotwarioinyourarea,

Ocarina of Time. I know it's getting a little long in the tooth now and it might not be the easiest to get in to for new fans of the franchise but it will always hold a place in my heart!

Kot_Box,

Even with its age, Ocarina of Time will always be one of the absolute greats. No game on the N64 managed to hit such an incredible atmosphere like that game did! I listen to the soundtrack frequently still

nxtequal,

I grew up without an N64 but on the Switch I've been working through SM64 and when I'm done with it I'm very excited to experience Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask for the first time!

hotwarioinyourarea,

It's probably lost some magic now if you've posted newer games but man, that game was my life when it came out.

Kot_Box,

Halo: Combat Evolved To this day, it was one of the most mind-blowing experiences I've had with a game on first play-through. The world, the characters, the MUSIC. It was such an exciting and immersive experience.

I still stand by the opinion that "The Silent Cartographer" is a perfect Halo level. It hits so perfectly with a balance of freedom within a contained environment. It showed the player that while there was a linear way to play the level, you could essentially complete it through quicker methods if you knew where to go and what to do. It even gives you different dialogue if you skip to other parts first.

It was also the level that was included with the PC Demo that I played hundreds of times. I loved that demo, replaying Silent Cartographer and playing match after match online in Blood Gulch. I think it might be time for me to play through the whole game again...

I've been thinking about that! Lemmy here is bringing me back to the 2000s in terms of message boards and people, it's making me want to play some custom edition...

jjsearle,

Dark Souls, the tone and atmosphere just does something for me that I can't really explain.

drownedPhoenician,

Oh yeah, the atmosphere is realy amazing

scoredseqrica,

Dark Souls is a masterpiece. To my great sadness I’ve never owned a machine that can play 2 or 3 or bloodborne or Elden Ring (steam deck when?) but I’ve put so many hours into DS1. It’s a game that I think about when I’m not playing it, which is super rare for me. Anyway, Balder Side Sword, high dex, fast roll pyro, come at me bra!

jjsearle,

I've played them all (except for sekiro) and some of them do somethings better, but DS1 just stands above them for me.

Squiddles,

Planescape: Torment. You're an immortal amnesiac scouring the world and the abyss to find the source of your immortality and destroy it so you can finally die. Hijinks ensue.

UpperBroccoli,

This place has all the charm of a pregnant spider

Gotta love Mortie!

russel,

Minecraft as a Singleplayer game since I play that consistently since the Halloween update. Sadly it never hooked my friends to this degree and it always went that was that I play alone on a server. Maybe one day with the kids... As for multiplayer it has to be Counter-Strike. Just perfect if you don't sweat it. For a VR it is Half-Life Alyx. Sidenote are there any games that came after Alyx that are on par with Alyx?

SevenSwell,

I feel you on the Minecraft thing, I'm the same way! I've started multiple servers or realms with my friends only to be left as the lone player after a week or two.

Weirdo picks beyond the usual stuff

  • gravity rush 2, also the most underated game of all time
  • pocket card jockey, my most played game freak game
  • nioh 2, I could play that game forever
  • okami, the game that led to my media studies minor
  • final fantasy tactics advanced. Fun fact, this game is the first in the ivalics series, so it's the first place you ever see a Viera or Banga. Also marche was right
  • chrono trigger (okay this one's in the usual stuff category but I can't not bring it up)

Oh also deus ex, that game expanded my mind into new dimensions. I didn't know games could be like that lol

SevenSwell,

People look down on FFTA a lot because it had cartoonish graphics, and even though there is some fair criticism I think it's way better than a lot of people give it credit for.

mint,
@mint@beehaw.org avatar

FFTA was goated with the sauce, and a fantastic first strategy game for my tender 7-8 years!

nxtequal,

These are visual novels, so some may disagree that they're games, but I really think everyone should play the original Ace Attorney trilogy. It has amazing, emotional storytelling, weaving threads until the final case of the third game where they all come together.

  • Nostalgia pick: Pokémon Gold Version, Game Boy Color. There is no matching the magic of your neighbor telling you they stuffed all of Kanto into Johto, you telling him he’s full of shit, there’s no way they could do that, and then finding out you were wrong. Everything was word of mouth back then.
  • Modern pick: Persona 4 Golden. All the Persona games are amazing, and I love 5, but 4 has more of a tight-knit friend group, feel-good vibe - plus one of the most heart-wrenching twists/game sequences I’ve played. Though 5 is a very close runner up for UI and the way it uses time to build drama/tension for the turning point in the story.
  • Indie pick: Donut County. So many hilarious dialogue and gameplay details, some great but not too challenging puzzles, and it’s just plain satisfying to suck up progressively larger items until everything is gone. Very chill and short, perfect for my tired adult brain these days.
  • Rhythm pick: Dance Dance Revolution / Stepmania. DDR Extreme 2 for the PS2 was my main game, but the hype around DDR in its heyday, especially in arcades, was unmatched. It’s fun, challenging, and excellent exercise if you’re not using the bar, which I never did. I have a custom built pad at home that one of my pets nibbled and is in need of repair, and barring that I’d still be playing today.
  • Honorable mentions: Phoenix Wright (all), Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Pokémon (all), Guitar Hero, Fitness Boxing, BIT.TRIP Runner, Coffee Talk.
AnEilifintChorcra,

I absolutely loved A Plague Tale Innocence, I haven't played Requiem yet because I wanted to give myself some time between them since I loved it so much. I've really only got back into gaming over the past year as I've had more money/time so I started with the Assassins Creed series which are open world games so Innocence was a great intro to modern linear games

I finally got into Skyrim a few months ago after trying to play it a few years ago and not understanding it. But now I love it and I haven't even got around to trying out mods or anything yet. I didn't realise a game from 2011 could have so much content and for most of it to still be so entertaining, I finally understand why its still so popular over a decade later, even the glitches and bugs tend to end up making the game even more fun

Pokemon Unbound is by far my favourite Pokemon game, it has so much more content than any of the official games and its got pretty much every Pokémon all in one game. Since its based on FireRed, I can play it on PC or my phone which is always nice when I've got some time to kill

drownedPhoenician,

For me it is The Last of Us which hit me emotionaly like no game since. I still get depressed when I think about Part II and I guess as far as story is concerned only books can be better. Haven't seen the show yet though.

scoredseqrica,

Disco Elysium for me. I’m mostly just sad I can’t replay it fresh again. Otherwise high ranking games on my list are Sid Miers Alpha Centuri, ck2, Obra Dinn, Undertale.

scoredseqrica,

Also Dark Souls, can’t believe I forgot it!

hotwarioinyourarea,

Disco Elysium and Dark Souls are absolute masterpieces.

DJDarren,

I finished RDR2 for the first time about eight months ago, and barely a day passes that I don't still think about it. It's a masterpiece, and one of the most beautiful games I've ever experienced.

But if pushed, I think I'd say that To The Moon is probably my favourite. It's just such a lovely thing that doesn't take too long to play, but the story absolutely floored me.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

RDR2 emotionally broke me. I played with my wife in the room and I turned around at that moment and we both just had tears. It was beautiful. Combat was perfect, length was perfect, quests were fun, it was funny, it was sad, it was exciting and also peaceful. I truly think it's a contender for game of the 2010-2020 decade.

DJDarren,
