But can also feel heartbreaking. I’m at war with the squirrels and slugs now.

@killyourfm for me what works is to put a little steel mesh cage around each plant. Or around each squirrel. Sometimes it takes both. If the cages are plated with copper, it might work with the slugs too.

@killyourfm

I don't know about squirrels, but sprinkling* cheap coffee grounds around my plants has made a world of difference in closing down the slug buffet.

*also sprayed some brewed room-temp directly on the plants to address the already-covered-in-slugs problem.

Best wishes to you and your plant wards

@anomalon I tried this and it does seem to work. Just didn’t have enough grounds to protect everything.

Must drink more coffee :blobupsidedown:

@killyourfm

If you can, find somewhere to source the kind of coffee so cheap and terrible you aren't (as) tempted to drink it.

Maxwell House is a good one for this (here @ .22/oz) https://www.amazon.com/Maxwell-Breakfast-Ground-Coffee-Canister/dp/B0862Y5W72

@anomalon Ohhhh interesting idea! I was under the impression it needed to be used grounds. Not the case?

@killyourfm good luck! i dealt with groundhogs at one point, and they're all very persistent. lots of remedies for slugs.

I do get heartbroken with all the work I put in. 😔 I love my gardens, We don't have the same sort of pests here but there are ground squirrels & rabbits. And the damn aphids that keep going after the milkweed I plant for the monarchs.

@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@crcollins My condolences about that. My garden isn’t even mature enough to have aphids, but I’m afraid of what happens once the 10 or so tomato plants start filling out. It’s nerve-wracking!
