LemmyKnowsBest,

Yeah… I wouldn’t go around announcing lack of license & insurance 🤦‍♀️ What are they THINKING??

Methinks the followers of this movement are being trolled by the “leaders” of this movement

HappycamperNZ,

Quick, smash their car so they can defend their sovereignty.

LemmyKnowsBest,

The Sovereign Citizen movement was originally set up by Big Autoglass to increase sales

Dudewitbow,

i think thats the point. its like scientology, except its targetting people who are paranoid of big brother.

federalreverse,

Do you have 1h46m? Because there’s an explanatory Münecat video. The whole “non-commercial travel” thing has a significance as well — US sovcits think if they announce that, they don’t need a license.

TheEntity,

I do not have a contract with you and I do not consent to paddling off these two hours of my life I'm never getting back.

cheezoid2,

Without prejudice

LemmyKnowsBest, (edited )

Thank you. I dived in. My attention span held out the first 24 minutes.

So far my main takeaway is that anyone who wants to stand up as a sovereign citizen needs to have a loud persistent unwavering personality and attitude for this. The kinda person who’s good at memorizing all this and talking loudly & incessantly, and never backs down.

Kinda the same personality it requires to be a lawyer, but sovereign citizens refuse to submit to the system. They’re standing up for fundamental human rights and they’re willing to martyr themselves for it, one legal confrontation at a time.

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

In their make believe world, is stealing from a sovcitizen a crime? Since “the law” doesn’t apply and the cops “have no authority”, it sure looks like they’re walking around with “free loot”

some_guy,

First time I’ve seen anyone propose this, but I remember in a vid where a man referred to his child daughter as “property,” so I think they have strong beliefs about this topic.

pseudo,
@pseudo@jlai.lu avatar

Could someone finally explain me what is sovereign citizen?

Pixlbabble,

Watch some youtube videos of these guys being pulled over. It’s hilarious.

pseudo,
@pseudo@jlai.lu avatar

I will.

afraid_of_zombies,

They try to use magic to become immune from the law.

Revonult,

People who claim they are not a member of any country. They resent the fact they were born into a country and automatically considered a citizen of that country without their consent and then bound by their rule. They get told by grifters and other delusion people that through legal loopholes and long forgotten legal jargon they can excuse themselves from the rule of goverment.

There is something to be said for not getting to choose your birth country and yadda yadda. However, typically these people still benefit from infrastructure and protections provided by the government while refusing to be comply with the rules that come along with it IE taxes, regulations, rules.

pseudo,
@pseudo@jlai.lu avatar

Thanks

BonesOfTheMoon,

They are a loosely connected group of anti government right wing people who believe they don’t have to pay taxes or have license plates or driver’s licenses, and try to pay bills using magical paperwork. They are sincerely hilarious and the YouTube videos are a hell of a rabbit hole.

pseudo,
@pseudo@jlai.lu avatar

Maybe they pay the fines using all that youtube money?

Aurolei,

Taxes pay for roads. If you are a sovereign citizen, I don’t see why you would be allowed to use or park on them.

Redfugee,

They don’t use or park on them… they travel on them (or whatever bullshit they say).

some_guy,

But I can quote some obscure law or resolution or whatever the fuck that proves that maritime whatever whatever…!

Facebones,

“Sometimes your roads travel over water, therefore I am subject to Poseidons rule, not yours!”

mightyfoolish,

This fake license plate is very aesthetically pleasing. Still don’t use fake license plates…

johannesvanderwhales,

You know the sad thing is, I bet a lot of cops don’t pull them over because they know it’s going to be a huge hassle for them.

PR3CiSiON,

Eh, on the other hand, some cops LOVE the fight.

BonesOfTheMoon,

And even though I hate cops I also don’t blame them because cops have died at the hands of sovcits before. I really don’t disagree.

generalpotato,

No insurance required huh? Would be unfortunate if something were to happen their car.

PR3CiSiON,

Insurance isn’t required for your car. It’s required to drive for everyone else’s car, and required for when the bank still owns your car, but not when it’s yours.

greyhathero,

Depends on the state

generalpotato,

…. we know how insurance works my dude. The comment was made in jest.

echodot,

I’m pretty sure they don’t have any insurance though.

Thcdenton,
CPMSP,

Between plates like this, odd looking flags, and red hats I have learned how to avoid dangerously foolish people.

I sure am glad that they’re deciding to mark themselves.

lars,

But The Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock was who first turned me into a red baseball cap admirer. The last 10 years have been a nightmare but it’s better than it was.

BonesOfTheMoon,

Aww Ad-Rock.

lars,

Omg right??

Retreaux,

I got a little story I’d like to tell

st3ph3n,

I look forward to seeing this appear in a bodycam video soon.

Draegur,

i can’t wait to impound this fucker and charge him $19.85 per foot of crash wrap to cover over his smashed window. And knowing my guys, they’ll use five feet very sloppily and overboard with lots of useless excess.

if we assume optimal conditions, as in, this dipshit is arrested within 2 miles of one of our impound yards, the very least amount this will cost him is $324.87, and that price goes up by $35.00 every rolling 24 hours.

if he doesn’t pay to get it back within 90 days, we’ll get a salvage title issued by the state registry of motor vehicles that transfers the ownership of the vehicle to us, then we’ll “auction” the vehicle off (which oftentimes means “selling” it to someone we like for dirt cheap) and subtract whatever meager chump change a secondary buyer was willing to pay sight-unseen from the outstanding bill and send the rest to collections. then he can rant about his sovereign citizenship to the collections agents that will be following him for years and years thereafter :3

numlok,

That’s a Plaid model Tesla, which starts over $100k. Please quadruple your fees and tack on some extra “service fees”.

Draegur,

alas, we legally cannot 😭
the towing and storage rates are set by state law where we operate…
if it were possible to crank the price higher and get away with it, especially for fuckers who really deserve it, we would.
as just and right as it would be to no longer honor the protections of law over individuals who reject the law, it is not up to us.

Klicnik,
@Klicnik@sh.itjust.works avatar

This seems like publicly admitting fraud.

FabledAepitaph,

This is why if I ever saw a tow truck driver in trouble, I’d just keep walking. Not worth the piss to put the fire out. I might start actively giving them shit when I see them on the road, tbh. I’m sure OP is going to come back with some hypermasculine BS in self-defense, but at the end of the day, they work at an impound lot so their opinion is basically inconsequential to anything I’ll ever do. :3

Draegur,

And that is why, the next time your car is in a ditch due to unforseen road conditions, you can expect to wait at least 4 hours before someone bothers to winch your car out, and charge you over six hundred dollars for the trouble.

If you were a pal worth helping out, maybe it could have gotten done faster. Maybe it could have been off the books. But hey. You shat that bed, you can lay in it buddy.

Or you can avoid trouble by staying the fuck home during inclement weather and keeping your insurance, registration, and license up to date so you never get arrested either and we never have any reason to interact with you. That way, we’ll all be happy. :p

militaryintelligence,

That always works, I’ve seen the videos

FireRetardant,

I love how the sovereign citizen group page has the American flag in their picture. Like what are you sovereign from if you’re still American?

800XL,

And they don’t need to pay taxes or anything but are entitled to everything taxes collectively pay for.

jumjummy,

And don’t forget that all these Soverign Citizen IDs, License Plates, etc. are bought with real money. Curious how these “coupons” don’t seem to work on these storefronts.

SkippingRelax,

You know what, that has crossed my mind a few times as THE reason even the most gullible idiot on this planet should have an eureka moment

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

Taxes and responsibility mostly.

mean_bean279,

You just know this person complains about the government tracking them and the police state of America while simultaneously driving one of the most tracking capable vehicles.

pineapplelover,

Same thought went through my mind. Unless they unplugged the modem. Very unlikely they did so.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

the idea that cars mean freedom is truly the most impressive piece of marketing ever pulled off, mmm yes i can certainly smell the freedom as i sit in a mile long queue on the highway huffing recycled exhaust fumes.

meanwhile a bicycle is so untraceable that if someone steals one it effectively becomes theirs, and combined with public transport you can spend your night sleeping on a train and wake up for some adventures in a completely different country.

TheFriar,

Not to mention you can get a train ticket with cash. Literally no one needs to know who you are.

YurkshireLad,

I’m surprised they can afford a car, never mind a Plaid.

aseriesoftubes,

People buying more car than they can afford is the American Way.

vaultdweller013,

Hey some of us just want a piece of crap. Giv eme the Yugo I want to learn how to drive mushy clutch.

HollandJim,

I’m surprised they can afford a car, never mind a Plaid.

Who says they’ll pay for it?

mean_bean279,

Model S Plaids are probably not as expensive as you think. They’re even more affordable when you don’t pay taxes nor insurance.

Car,

eBay motors sold listings make me think they aren’t getting into a used Model S Plaid for less than around 55k. If they aren’t paying taxes or insurance, they aren’t paying down a loan for the car because the creditor would repossess that shit so fast.

mean_bean279,

I bet that car is either recently purchased or they’re actually paying their loan considering that you can disable a Tesla with the Vin. It’s one of the most connected cars in the world.

norbert,
norbert avatar

Crypto early adopter who got lucky and wants to avoid paying taxes on his winnings, or troll.

Nougat,

If they want to avoid paying crypto taxes, they should be paying every single other tax, and not making themselves a target for investigation.

Oh wait - that would be reasonable. Never mind, carry on.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

sensible law breakers just silently drive a car with bogus license plates and a fake license, and behave better on the roads than 90% of the population so the police has no reason to even notice their existence

navi,
@navi@lemmy.tespia.org avatar

You can buy car emblems for $5 on ebay 😏

Treczoks,

They probably “paid” for the car with their ominous “coupons”. This is a repo waiting to happen.
