eosfpodcast,

Frankly, I’m tired of new social media platforms that launch with “invites only.” It’s giving a “all the cool kids are here!” vibe. Now people are begging for invites and even trying to sell them. History repeats and folk learn nothing. I’m content here on Mastodon.

Question for fellow Black Mastodon users: What’re your feelings about ?

seachanger,

@eosfpodcast yall I just want to note that rod specifivally asked for responses from black mastodon. When someone does this it’s a good idea if you’re not black to pay attention to that request and sit back and read and learn instead of respond. This allows black voices to lead the convo

eosfpodcast,

@seachanger Thank you so much for the support! 🙏🏿

seachanger,

@eosfpodcast thank you for being here and building community - your voice is valued and important

alake,

@eosfpodcast yeah, nah. I pass. Not walking down that cesspool of hope in the obscenely wealthy again. I can't. Their words do. not. matter.

I get that there are opportunities to improve ActivityPub in general and Mastodon specifically. I've seen the essential and enduring value of genuinely open standards and open source, governed by open communities over the last 30 years. They are the only form of tech that has produced outcomes I trust.

Mastodon ain't perfect, but I simply trust it more at the moment to produce the outcomes I hope for.

sonyasteele,

@eosfpodcast I'm not interested in joining a billionaire's platform. Oligarchs are not loyal to any person or principle; they only love power and money. I might browse and pick up bits of information on other social media sites, but I'll save my contributions for Mastodon.

damonoutlaw,

@eosfpodcast there seems a lot of groupthink here. I’m actively on BlueSky. I enjoy it. Black people more specifically black women have largely influenced the growth there. They feel safe and free to contribute. Many of them spoke about their negative experiences with Mastodon especially pertaining to racism. I get the skepticism with Jack but he’s not the CEO & is 1/3 board members and mostly focused on Nostr.

HikaTamika,

@eosfpodcast Waiting to see how they handle federation because post-data mobility seems beneficial, but hard to implement. But hey, they're promising it.

Not being able to move my stuff with me is the one thing about Masto that bums me out.

Sometimes other servers look like a potential better fit, but I can't move my stuff with me. Or, sometimes my friends end up on servers that get shut down or blocked by mine and they have to start from scratch somewhere else.

HikaTamika,

@eosfpodcast I do think the trickling out of invites is lame though because it leads to a lack of certain demographics. From what I can tell, rn, BlueSky seems very cishet, white, tech, and journalist. (But I could be wrong.)

damonoutlaw,

@HikaTamika @eosfpodcast you are very wrong

jrm4,

@eosfpodcast

The reason I complain so much about THIS place is because I want it to get better, because it to me is objectively the best way to do this; in the same way that the best way to do personal messaging is email.

Convenience is nice, but in the long run you have to remember the power/politics.

@eosfpodcast Hard same, man. Artificial scarcity is a grift that folks just don't seem to learn from.

eosfpodcast,

@valthonis Yes! It’s the same scenario that happened when Clubhouse launched. We see how that turned out. Also, folk have short memories. I’m staying far way from anything Dorsey’s involved with.
