True story. A science teacher explained chromosomes to her students. She told them there were x chromosomes, y chromosomes and non-binary chromosomes. I’m not kidding.

@StillIRise1963 That would be cool if it were true.

I guess my scripts for our migration might be something of a hit. We'll see how they fare with 50-ish failover clusters here in a bit, but the tests with 10 or so were smooth as silk twice earlier today. I know this doesn't sound complicated — it's just failovers amirite? — but there are stumbling blocks that have to be accounted for including network latency, SIOS mirroring, Windows pending reboots, AD, DNS...y'know all of the usual wrenches getting thrown in the gears.

Typescript is still the most annoying language I've worked with in the nine years I've written software. Not a long time perhaps but still consistently hair pulling.

valthonis,
@valthonis@dice.camp avatar

@jalcine Ngl, the friction of trying to move from JS to TS is what pushed me to take my plunge into Rust.

I realize that's not an option for everyone, though. I'm mostly just pointing out that you're not alone in your TS resistance.

Also, what even is the purpose of a beard?

From what I can tell, the benefit is that it gives me the option for another face. If I want to be mildly unrecognizable, I can just grow out my facial hair.

But other than that, I have no idea why men grow beards.

valthonis,
@valthonis@dice.camp avatar

@atomicpoet I maintain a beard because I like the feel of having it. It is soft, it insulates my face from both cold and being directly touched (to a degree), and it hides skin imperfections that I'd otherwise spend a lot of grooming time to obfuscate.

It's absolutely not for everyone, but I find it to be handy and worth the cost of maintenance. YMMV.

valthonis,
@valthonis@dice.camp avatar

@atomicpoet Ah, I see. I do wonder if it's less of an adaptation for modernity and more of a holdover in the genetic noise from our predecessors.

How do speech impediments like lisps and such affect native speakers of tonal languages? My brain keeps insisting that using tonality to encode information is introducing a TON of ambiguity into a language, but I've also been wrong about stuff I know way more about, so…

The amount of energy my parents' generation spent trying to scare us with the spectre of "flipping burgers for a living" really belied the degree to which they'd come to rely on the mere existence of “burger flippers" for all parts of their comfortable lifestyle.

I understand why currency bills have security features (to defeat counterfeiters.) What I don't get is why so many treasuries and national banks advertise their security features. It feels like they're just telling would-be counterfeiters what new hardware to buy to pull it off.

Am I missing something?

It is wild to compare the increasingly shrill news coverage of the college protests to the on-the-ground reports I get from my kid. Really drives home that media and politicians care about what something looks like, but not what it actually is.

The final episode of Voyager!

The crew is now old. Harry Kim is now a captain rather than an ensign.

Apparently you can fly a starship through the Golden Gate bridge.

valthonis,
@valthonis@dice.camp avatar

@Cassandra The relative scale on starships is not something that is always depicted accurately on-screen, but that sounds about right for Voyager. She a svelte little ship.

valthonis,
@valthonis@dice.camp avatar

@Cassandra The big span in the middle is like... 3/4th of a mile, I think? The bridge as a whole is deceptively huge.

Anyway, I'm just nerding out. Enjoy your episode!
