This is such a strange lawsuit.

Does anybody have any insight as to how 4 school boards could possibly prove fault of student success to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok?

mirgray,

@erin well, if the students are using school wifi, they have logs showing what portion of their traffic is TikTok connected. I suppose it is probably true that TikTok is rarely used for academics. (Yes, they could also block access to TikTok during school hours or always.)

I don't think they can use a quantitative number for students using personal data plans.

My fear is the cost of lawyering unless more boards join in as a class action. I guess 5+ years of lawyering before court.

@mirgray I question the validity of the claim and how much of this can be blamed on social media giants when it’s easy for them to say that it’s the parents who are giving permission to be on the sites, and are providing the devices to access them. Plus there are parental control options. Parents are also the ones modeling the behaviour and addiction of social media.

I read a bit more and saw that there is a case in the US that’s similar, I just don’t see how this is a viable lawsuit.

mirgray,

@erin oh, I don't think it is a wise move.
