Any news on Cinnamon DE?

With all the news surrounding KDE Plasma 6, I’m wondering if there has been any interesting news about the Cinnamon DE. This is my preferred DE and what I’m currently using on Arch. Last we heard, Cinnamon moved to Version 6 on Linux Mint, and that version comes with an experimental Wayland setup. Since then, I haven’t seen or heard much about what’s going to happen next. Even the Linux Mint Blog doesn’t seem to indicate much.

Has anybody else heard anything lately about Cinnamon?

Cinnamon normally has incremental updates. If you’re hoping for some massive new features update, you’re going to be disappointed. I think at most you might get a Wayland option.

On Linux Mint you have that option, I don’t think it’s on Linux Mint Debian Edition yet and not sure about Arch.

But at for the look and feel etc, I don’t expect to see any change. I’m assuming the default cinnamon you install on Arch is pretty bland and not as nice as the LM version. But you just need to find out how they themed it to get the same cool look.

The only improvement I’d like to see is an auto dark mode at sunset option added. The rest is fine by me. I run Linux Mint Debian Edition.

Initially, it is quite bland, but I have already downloaded the Linux Mint themes and backgrounds, plus some other theme options that were recommended to me. So, in terms of themes, I’m okay with that.

As for the Wayland option, that is available as a selection in the Login Screen. I don’t use it very often, because it is quite buggy.

Ok cool. There are also other themes you can get for cinnamon if you want to dramatically change the look.

For example I have an OS X inspired theme with a dock because I prefer they layout to the windows style default layout.

The Wayland session is currently in beta so it’s definitely going to be buggy.

merthyr1831,

cinnamon is moving to wayland, finally. you can actually try their experimental build right now from the login screen.

they’re supposedly moving away from the GNOME stack (mutter) for this which is interesting, as it opens up mint to become even more independent in the future

markus99,

Lmao boomer stuff

Bitrot,

Linux Mint 22 is getting more attention as the Ubuntu LTS release nears. Typically it would be release in June / July. That’s when I’d expect to start hearing more about Cinnamon enhancements as that is where development efforts are focused in general, and they tend to release changes pretty close to larger Mint updates.

Cinnamon tends to not do much fanfare or buzz. Things are understated.

In January I read this post on the Linux Mint forums saying: “Wayland isn’t expected to replace Xorg as default any time soon, not in 21.3, not in 22.x, but we want to be ready all the same.”

A blog post in January stated that Linux Mint 22’s “Cinnamon edition will include a new Nemo Actions Organizer”. But that’s all I know sadly.

PlexSheep,

Which is too bad. Personally, I’m using plasma on LMDE

someonesmall,

LMDE is Debian with Cinnamon (including the xapps). If you use LMDE with KDE you are basically using plain debian (except for some weirdly replaced packages like “adduser” and libpolkit).

acockworkorange,

They like it that way, who cares?

PlexSheep,

I know. It works pretty good. What more up to date software I needy I can get with appimage s, flatpaks and extra apt repos

just_another_person,

Incredibly wrong. Wow.

catloaf,

Define “news”. The latest release was two days ago: github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/releases

By “news”, I mean do we have any major updates, like improvements to the experimental Wayland support. From the link you shared, that minor update doesn’t really mean much to me.

What Wayland improvements did you have in mind? Is it one of these?
