Mastodon/AP encourages the open web and decentralization but also makes it more challenging to exist on the open web, and more difficult to be a small decentralized publisher. Problems that get worse as it grows...
Mastodon should start a US non-profit, to raise funds, to pay people to fix this!🙂
Or should they sit around and hope someone does it for free?
Or should they wait for Meta to try to solve it, then watch everyone jump on them and say they don't trust them?
@mrcopilot This sounds like a problem best solved by websites experiencing this problem adding caching on their end (Varnish/Squid server or Fastly/Bunny/CDN service) than Mastodon et al changing anything.
@mrcopilot@lisamelton so far no one's taken the initiative to provide a caching link preview service, nor the work to implement that in fediverse software. Feels like something Fastly could help support.. cc @haubles
@mrcopilot thanks for mentioning us, @thisismissem! @lisamelton, please feel free to DM me or check out fastly.com./forward, @devs has content delivery offerings that can help!
@mrcopilot@lisamelton As mentioned in the article it's on the roadmap. It's likely not going to be a trivial solution (and a centralized anything just sounds like a non-starter Idea).
