notroot,

Hi new folks!

  • Follow generously. If you don't follow anyone, you won't have anything in your Home feed! That's fine if you're here to broadcast, but it might be hard to find followers if you don't follow.

  • Lead generously. If you don't let anyone follow you, you won't have any reach into networks outside your own. That's fine if you want a private experience, but remember: nothing is really private in the Fediverse. Even DMs are not really private.

  • Mute on a whim. You can silence users and threads with a click, either temporarily or permanently. You don't have to take any shit.

  • Block at will. Silencing the bigot not good enough? You can block individual users, or whole domains. Probably most of the worst of the worst are already defederated from your instance. But if not, you can do it yourself, for yourself.

  • is NOT the . You can migrate from Mastodon instance to Mastodon instance. Or, you can migrate from Mastodon to . You can have a user, and see and boost your pics in your Calckey timeline, or Mastodon timeline, or or or, or, ... Don't limit yourself to this one playground. YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL.

More

  • Boost generously. Boosting basically shares a post with your network, and provides everyone in your network with the opportunity to follow the boosted user. (It obviously also bumps it to the top of the timeline.)

  • Check boosted users in your own timeline. When you see a boosted post, check to see if you have followed the boosted user. This is a great way to find new folks to follow, and expand your network horizontally into the networks of people you already follow.

  • Don't be afraid to "Favorite". In we have emojis, but 🤣will just look like ⭐ to users. Sometimes you wanna give a personal H/T to a user without sharing their post with your network. This is how you do it.

  • Use Alt Text when posting pics. There's lots of blind users in the Fediverse, because a culture has developed around always adding alt-text to every image and meme. Lots and lots of people use screen readers, and they are not shy about telling you. It's easy and makes somebody happy. Why not do it?

  • Use Content Warnings when appropriate. You be the judge of what is "appropriate" and don't worry about scolds. They exist everywhere, even in the Fediverse.
