The thing is...

That means I have a reasonable expectation of reaching you... the person reading this.

Do you get it, yet?

notroot, to random

Look, I'm anon enough to not lie...

I'm angry. I've been angry for a LONG FUCKING TIME. Since the '80s. All through the '90s. All through the '00s. All through the '10s. All through the '20s, so far...

I'm Gen X. Almost prototypical Gen X... perceived "slacker", but secretly a motherfucking radical, all along. Like Obama, only not successful... Just ANGRY.

How has this shaped me? Simple:

It's made me appreciate my kids' POV. I take the Millennial and Gen Z side. That's how I work. I assume, a priori, that my kids and their friends know something that I do not... That they're clued in on events and eventualities about which I am simply not privy.

I assume, a priori, that I am ignorant. That I need to be educated by my children and their friends.

That's my Revolutionary operating principle: I have something to contribute to my kids' revolution. Not my revolution. My my generation's changes. My kids. I back them. That's my role.

Badass dad who will fuck your shit up to defend my kids and their friends.

Yes, there IS a two-tiered justice system in the USA.

The same one there has always been.

CRT is dead-on. The law exists to protect the rich and their property from the poor. Period.

I have the domain name notroot.social but I'm not doing anything with it right now.

I'd like to set up another project there (I was running , before) ... but I'm not sure what to try.

I was thinking about but it sounds like a big PITA and I already have a account at lemmy.sdf.org

So then I was thinking about (nee, ) but that's what this account is.

Any other suggestions of fun fedi to play with?

Anyhow the Google quasi-monopoly on web browser technology is bad.

Firefox is in low single digits.

Only competitor is Apple, but Safari isn't available on all platforms.

Google needs to be force-split up in multiple companies like 10 years ago.

notroot,

@thomasfuchs I don't know why more people don't just switch to Firefox. I haven't used Chrome as my main browser in close to a decade.

It's not hard. Nobody's forcing anyone to use Chrome.

And I'm still angry about the same thing as I was during the WTO riots in Seattle: old cishet white men.

Look, I grew up white trash in VERY rural America. I've heard it all: "shoot the illegals", "the Race War is coming, choose a side"...

Well, I have chosen a side.

I choose the America we CAN be, not the America we ARE.

Not "were"... "are". A racist country populated by almost 40% die-hard racist fucking scum.

At some point, needs teeth. Deadly teeth.

I volunteer to be a tooth.

Do you?

Mastodon Lists might finally be useful on a Threads-federated instance. (I plan to continue to have multiple Fediverse users, some with Threads, some not).

My main interest is following my immediate family, none of whom I've been able to budge off of Liesbook, but all of whom have IG accounts.

With lists, I can check in on them, specifically, not lost in my Home feed amongst all the outrage about Threads. (For the record, I do not and will never have a Threads account.)

colo_lee, to ai

I know we're all pumped up to hate generative AI. And to cheer Sarah Silverman on as she goes after our "enemies". But ...

The complaints are basically all the same, and what it comes down to is the argument that AI systems were trained on copyright-covered material (duh) and that somehow violates their copyrights.

But… this is both wrong and not how copyright law works. Training an LLM does not require “copying” the work in question, but rather reading it. This lawsuit is basically arguing that reading a copyright-covered work is, itself, copyright infringement.

These lawsuits aren't arguing any actual copying (which, you know, is kind of important for there to be copyright infringement), but just that the LLMs have learned from the works of the authors.

I understand the emotional appeal of these kinds of lawsuits, but the legal reality is that these cases seem doomed to fail.

https://www.techdirt.com/2023/07/11/a-bunch-of-authors-sue-openai-claiming-copyright-infringement-because-they-dont-understand-copyright/

notroot,

@colo_lee Except that the LLM doesn't actually learn anything. At all. It doesn't "read" because it doesn't have eyeballs, or a brain.

It's statistics... so yeah. Copyright infringement 1000%

notroot, to random

So want to exterminate us. Wouldn't it be prudent to instead exterminate them, first?

notroot, to random

We could solve a lot of problems by simply amending the 2nd Amendment. Delete "shall not be infringed" and then let's fucking infringe like Waco and Ruby Ridge were rehearsals.

notroot, to random

What will a Threads-federated global feed look like?

It depends. Has your instance federated with threads.net? Has anyone on your instance followed anyone on threads.net?

If so, then your Global looks like threads.net.

Your Local feed OTOH will look the same as always.

What about your Home feed? That's posts by people you follow and their boosts, including any threads.net boosts.

So, basically, if you're on a Threads-fed instance your Global is gonna be a hot mess. Your Local will be the same as always. And your Home will be also pretty much the same.

So far, so good... let's see how it holds up under load.

Trying to figure out the Reddit-likes, and feeling like a newb. Should I be setting up a new account? are there apps? Would a app work with ? Is that even the right question?

    notroot,

@john You can browse Lemmy or kbin instances without logging in, but you need to create an account if you want to subscribe.

I think apps are coming or maybe are here. Lately I've been on my desktop browser a lot so I'm not sure.

Client apps generally use the frontend API of the server software, so it depends on whether or not Lemmy and kbin APIs will be compatible. For example, apps are not compatible with and vice-versa.

This is an important PSA for folks looking to make any place more inclusive. Do you want to be liked by everyone? Or do you want to make progress?

I don't know anyone that has both been successful in transforming a non-inclusive place, and hasn't been accused of sounding hostile.

    misc, to random
    @misc@mastodon.social avatar

Time for some game theory (but actually)

    notroot,

@misc I think this is as far as it would go, in most cases. Especially the big instances listed on have all agreed to abide by the Mastodon Server Covenant:

    https://joinmastodon.org/covenant

When I ran my solo instance (until a couple weeks ago) ... this was as far as it got. Then I defederated from 100s of instances in a sweeping purge of neonazi scum.

And I think it likely that on many if not most instances, this is as far as the mods/admins would let it go.

Basically, it's "Inception Meets Whack-a-Mole". Once brigading occurs, most Masto admins will consider defederation. It's too much work otherwise.

    notroot,

@misc They can do that now, but trolls on covenant instances will just get the banhammer. Then they go make an angry revenge instance. Then they get the blockhammer. Finally they're defederated.

    Like a turd being flushed.

Point being... I don't think Threads will be able to effectively federate with the existing fediverse, because they have weak server rules. Threads won't whack the mole -- Lies of Tiktok -- so they become the mole.

    blake, to Pixelfed

While I understand the motive for 's upcoming/new Mastodon SSO, I don't like it.

    1. It's confusing to talk about (see above). You have to word it very specifically to make it clear you're signing into Pixelfed with a Mastodon account.
    2. The concept is confusing. It isn't the same account, by any means, and you can register on both services. Threads, for example, is more or less an extension on top of Instagram, like Guppe is an "extension" here.
    3. It's very narrow and non-standard.
    notroot,

@blake I like the idea very much, but seems like it should be generalized like a federated and distributed auth SSO microservice?

What about a simple federated profile service? No posting just profile and maybe gallery. Due to federation, it could provide LDAP-like service, and basic information that would still have to be copied into each instance DB with the option to set a local password... Not really any different from how SSO works anywhere else.
