Just checked my local HiFi-pusher, and their first listing for “turntable" was the "Thorens New Reference”. Retails for the equivalent of 400.000 AUD 😄 (It came up on top of the "Most Popular” sorting, so I think their algorithm is off.)
They are currently listing 117 different turntables, and their cheapest Audio Technica offering goes for around 260 AUD. That is a pretty wild range.

I know a while back, there was a period where the only people interested in turntables were audio fanatics who scorned CDs (my cousin was one of those). They probably wouldn't blink at a $400 turntable.
No, not $400/- it is $400 000/- but yes, filthy rich fanatics.
I got rid of my vinyls years back (kept just a handful for nostalgic reasons) and have never looked back. Been with Tidal for years and years, great service, great sound, zero hassle.
I do understand people having large collections wanting to keep playing them tho, and I DO miss the 12" cover artwork and liner notes.
