Trump threatens to prosecute Bidens if he’s re-elected unless he gets immunity

Time magazine called the ex-president’s plans ‘an imperial presidency that would reshape America and its role in the world’

Donald Trump has warned that Joe Biden and his family could face multiple criminal prosecutions once he leaves office unless the US supreme court awards Trump immunity in his own legal battles with the criminal justice system.

In a sweeping interview with Time magazine, Trump painted a startling picture of his second term, from how he would wield the justice department to hinting he may let states monitor pregnant women to enforce abortion laws.

Trump made the threat against the Biden family in an interview with Eric Cortellessa of Time, in which he shared the outlines of what the magazine called “an imperial presidency that would reshape America and its role in the world”.

OldWoodFrame, (edited )

It’s crazy that this is even a political talking point. I support Biden in this election but I very much want him prosecuted if they have clear evidence of a serious crime he committed.

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah they don’t have anything beyond straw grasping

OutlierBlue,

Rather have straw grasping than pussy grabbing.

OldWoodFrame,

“If you give me immunity for my crimes, I’ll give you immunity for your crimes. Deal?”
“I haven’t committed any crimes.”
“…”

MakePorkGreatAgain,

other than, you know, the whole supporting Israel and its genocidal acts thing

card797,

Charge Congress with that crime.

JamesFire,

That might be a crime against humanity, but it isn’t a crime in the US criminal code.

MakePorkGreatAgain,

convenient, aint it?

OldWoodFrame,

You can disapprove of the actions but supporting an allied nation with money or weapon sales is squarely a presidential act, nobody thinks presidents should personally be held criminally liable for their presidential duties.

captainlezbian,

Yeah, The Hague can try him if they’d like, but the United States has no evidence of a crime

Madison420,

You know Trump is the one who moved the embassy to Jerusalem which is ultimately the match that lit the keg.

mjhelto,

Right? These Russian or right-wing grifters would be fawning over support for Israel and Bibi’s genocide if it was tRump in there right now. Fuck, the dude would probably have sent US troops to aid in ground offensives alongside the IDF.

It’s tiresome, and I just want this collective nightmare for most, and wet dreams for others, to be over. The constant goal-post dodgeball game is beyond overplayed at this point. Anyone who still conflates what Biden is doing with regards to Israel and what tRump would do in the same position, are beyond help at this point, IMO. tRump supporters have, for nearly a decade now, refused to accept reality as it exists, and instead are perfectly content with tRump so long as he is hurting the right people. They simply cannot distance their ideology from their politics so they double-down.

This is why MAGA constantly thinks all those voting for Biden and the Democratic party are doing so because they are loyal to Biden and the party. Most of us voting for Biden are not loyal at all to the Democrats or Biden. We vote for whomever will move the needle toward the kind of world we want to live in. tRump absolutely will do the up opposite, we already know that from the first circus of an administration.

Whatever keeps that traitor out of positions of power is a good thing for this country, it’s people, and the world. tRump is a weak-man’s version of a strong-man. He deserves no less than jail time.

NoLifeGaming,

You really just said genocide joe hasn’t committed any crimes? Thats insane

tegs_terry,

What would the reaction have been had he denied aid to Israel? The answer is fuck off, you made your bed.

NoLifeGaming,

His crucial role in support and push for the Iraq War which resulted in the estimated death of 1 million Iraqis and many american troops? Biden has been a war criminal and corrupt way before the palestine issue. You made your bed when you decided to give loyalty to these corrupt criminals. You’re the reason why we have shot candidates and why we have corrupt people in power. Gtfo

brygphilomena,

give loyalty

See, this is where we differ. I am not loyal to Biden. I would support someone else in a heartbeat, have supported others instead of him.

I am not loyal to him, nor the Democratic party. I am, however, strongly against Trump and practically everything he does and stands for. To that end, I have to do what I can to see that he not be in a position of power again. To that end, I will vote against him, even if that means a. Vote for Biden.

tegs_terry,

I don’t like that or anything else like it, including Israel, but I know the facts and the realpolitik and it was: rock -> Biden <- hard place. Israel was a big mistake by the USA and UK and as such they’re both attached by a un-severable umbilical. Nobody else would’ve acted any differently.

My loyalty lies nowhere near Biden’s government - I’m not even from the US, I’m British - I’m just realistic about the breaks. Carry on with the principled stand and see what kind of sainthood it grants you. If you’re voting against Biden rather than opposed to Trump then you really will have a shit sandwich; your bed won’t be made at all, you’ll be sleeping rough.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And the only other person who would have been in the position to act would have been Trump. Considering it was Trump who moved the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, I don’t think he would have much of a problem with this genocide.

btaf45,

I don’t think he would have much of a problem with this genocide.

It’s so ridiculous that anybody would ignore the fact that Treason Trump would have cared much less about Gaza than anyone else.

NoLifeGaming,

Trump is corrupt but so is supporting a God damn genocide. Trump did say to finish up but he also added “you need to get peace” so thats out of context

jordanlund, (edited )
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

LOL - “crucial role”.

www.factcheck.org/…/bidens-record-on-iraq-war/

“Biden was a consistent critic of the way the Bush administration handled the war: Its failure to exhaust diplomatic solutions, its failure to enlist a more robust group of allies for the war effort, and the lack of a plan for reconstruction of Iraq. Some of his comments proved to be quite prescient, including his warnings about the likely higher-than-expected cost and length of the war, and the complexity of “winning the peace” once Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s regime was toppled.”

“I will vote for this because we should be compelling Iraq to make good on its obligations to the United Nations,” Biden said. “Because while Iraq’s illegal weapons of mass destruction program do not — do not — pose an imminent threat to our national security, in my view, they will, if left unfettered. And because a strong vote in Congress, as I said, increases the prospect for a tough, new U.N. resolution on weapons of mass destruction, it is likely to get weapons inspectors in, which, in turn, decreases the prospects of war, in my view."

You really need to stop blaming Biden for the actions of other people.

NoLifeGaming,

Cherry picked information to try and down play his role.

  1. Democrats controlled the senate and he was the chair on the senate committee of foreign relations

“I do not believe this is a rush to war,” Biden said a few days before the vote. “I believe it is a march to peace and security. I believe that failure to overwhelmingly support this resolution is likely to enhance the prospects that war will occur …”

  1. He purposely chose witnesses in the hearing that all had a pro war positions.

(www.theguardian.com/…/joe-biden-role-iraq-war)

More information can be found in the documentary “worth the price?” (youtu.be/rrLFQnlf6lQ)

Joe biden’s support of israel isn’t anything new, in fact he once said, “were there not israel, the United States would have to invent Israel to protect her interests in the region”

And, again, not the driving force you make him out to be, that was the Bush administration which he is literally on the record opposing.

If he does have blame, it’s in believing the lies of the Bush administration… but back then, that was not uncommon.

btaf45,

Biden has not committed any crimes. Don’t conflate what Bibi is doing with what Joe is doing. They are not the same person.

OldWoodFrame,

Yeah almost like “genocide Joe” is an inane nickname mischaracterizing the situation or something.

NoLifeGaming,

Supporting genocide, so I don’t think its a mischaracterization at all.

FiniteBanjo,

Let’s reframe this a little bit.

Would you agree to the nuance that a 1940s US nazi sympathizer, perhaps even one that sent them funds, isn’t as bad as the nazi soldiers or their commanders themselves? Or is that also equivalent in your eyes?

T00l_shed,

Imo it’s as bad, however, it’s like trump et al are going to be super nazis in all this. So if I COULD vote for Biden he is the absolute no brainer, because trump will be a million times worse.

hdnsmbt,

Sure thing, just like he locked Clinton up. Why does anyone believe the stupid shit this idiot says?

There were still sane people in his administration to keep him in lineish, if he gets in again they will all be loyal to Trump, not the USA

Woozythebear,

It’s scare tactics by democrats.

It’s different now though. He didn’t have the power to lock her up. This time around, he’ll have Project 2025 behind him to allow him to do things like that.

Tar_alcaran,

He also didn’t have an actual legal case, despite a LOT of digging.

dyathinkhesaurus,

He won’t need any. Can just “trump” up some charges (pun not intended). He’ll be a dictator, it won’t matter. He could shoot them on 5th Ave. and no one would say a thing

btaf45,

Stop with the nonsense that Convicted Sex Offender Treason Trump has already completely enshitified the country. It wouldn’t work because (1) the judge would throw out the case, and (2) no grand jury would vote to proceed. That is why Bill Barr refused Treason Trump’s order to prosecute Hillary Clinton.

Trump has already tried this and failed.

hdnsmbt,

Bill Barr wasn’t AG for another 2.5 years before trump let off Clinton.

hdnsmbt,

He’s the exact same impotent blowhard. Not even his cronies will change that. He’ll lose interest the minute he’s elected, just like with Clinton.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

He might lose interest. His handlers might not. You need to read about Project 2025. It’s what happens if Trump wins.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_2025

hdnsmbt,

I know about the boogeyman. Not even Americans are going to sit down and watch this happen.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “Americans won’t let that happen” and then it happens.

hdnsmbt,

These idiots are not going to magically be in the majority over night. How many tough guys write manifestos like that every day? Sorry I’m not scared by some big words by Charlie Kirk.

WraithGear,
@WraithGear@lemmy.world avatar

We have let every step leading up to our current stage happen without meaningful challenge. Why would this momentum stop now?

hdnsmbt,

What momentum? Maga? Didn’t the fat guy lose the election?

WraithGear,
@WraithGear@lemmy.world avatar

Project 2025 is a plan already set in motion. It started when i was a child, and there really has been no real blow against its success.The setback of trump losing the election has not stopped the momentum. You can tell because the loss of rights is happening under the democrats watch. If you response is “well they really could not have stopped it” then the plan is working as intended

hdnsmbt,

No, my response is, democrats act on a 20-year-plan by Charlie Kirk, really? Or is it possible the causation you see is merely a correlation? “The loss of rights” seems awfully vague to me. What policies did democrats specifically implement that go back to that manifesto?

WraithGear,
@WraithGear@lemmy.world avatar

Um project 2025 is a right wing plan to institute conservatives values that increase the influence of white christian values in politics, lowering taxes for wealthy donors, deregulating corporations, and equate money with political power as they lose the popular vote. Not sure why you are referencing the democrats.

hdnsmbt,

Um, you brought up democrats when you said a democrat being president didn’t stop its momentum and “the loss of rights is happening under democrats watch”.

WraithGear,
@WraithGear@lemmy.world avatar

Well yes, there is a plan in place by republicans that has not been stopped. The fall out of which could not even have been stopped after Biden became president.

hdnsmbt,

So, what you’re saying is it’ll happen regardless of trump winning or losing? Because all I said is that trump is a blowhard that quickly loses interest, a point that still stands and has nothing to do with project25.

WraithGear,
@WraithGear@lemmy.world avatar

The point is that the whole “Americans aren’t just going to let this happen” thing is not accurate. We are letting it happen because their plan is not reliant on the out come off any one election. And are still shifting right

hdnsmbt,

The entire world is shifting right, it’s what happens in less economically stable times. Granted, Americans may actually sit by, watching their country slip into even more authoritarianism but I think you’re putting way too much weight on this stupid manifesto.

WraithGear,
@WraithGear@lemmy.world avatar

I mean it spells out what they are doing, how they are doing it, and the consequences of their success. And so far its wildly successful. Its not some secret, its a total admission of their goals. Is no reason to not take them at their word in this regard.

hdnsmbt,

I can write a manifesto that says “when I’m king I will make the sun rise in the morning and make it go down in the evening”. That doesn’t mean I’m responsible for that.

You successfully dragged me into an argument over something that was never my point and I will respectfully end it now.

btaf45,

He’ll lose interest the minute he’s elected, just like with Clinton.

That’s not what happened. He directly ordered Bill Barr to prosecute Clinton and Bill Barr refused knowing there was no grounds. Convicted Sex Offender Treason Trump doesn’t have the power to do this. He literally tried already tried and failed.

hdnsmbt,

Here’s an article where Conway says trump won’t prosecute Clinton from November 2016, few days after the election: www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38069585.amp

Bill Barr entered office as trump’s AG in February 2019: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Barr

EatATaco,

The guy literally tried to overturn an election he lost. It wouldn’t surprise me if it’s just bluster, but at the same time it also wouldn’t surprise me that he is trying to become a tyrant.

hdnsmbt,

Being a tyrant takes energy he just doesn’t have. He’s a tired old man desperately trying to get elected to get out of his legal troubles.

SoleInvictus,

Absolutely. As long as he keeps throwing these batshit fascist ideas out there, eventually one or more will gain traction and actually happen.

Coreidan,

The guy built his entire platform off fooling idiots.

Why would he change now?

mPony,

Fuck TIME Magazine for giving anyone a platform to make threats against others.

dhork,

But it’s important that the stuff he says gets documented. If for no other reason than if it all goes downhill, the alien anthropologists can figure out what the hell happened after we exterminate ourselves.

Claro que si, por supuesto, y con gusto.

EatATaco,

Except he can still run for and win the presidency from jail. Clearly still important for anyone who is amazingly still on the fence to know that he ja threatening to do scary shit.

themeatbridge,

I refuse to believe anyone is still on the fence. There are bigots who support Trump, and there are bigots who support Trump but don’t want to admit they are bigots out loud.

EatATaco,

Refusing to believe reality doesn’t make reality go away.

Ironically, refusing to believe reality is something trump supporters are infamous for.

otp,

There are the people on the fence about voting for Biden. Given that it’s a two party system, that effectively means that some people are on the fence about whether they want to help Trump win or help him lose.

themeatbridge,

And I’m saying I think those people are liars. They want Trump to win, but they think admitting that out loud will make them look bad.

otp,

I agree, but I don’t think it’s all of them. Some of them genuinely don’t want Trump or Biden to win, and think the right way to be heard democratically is to vote third party or spoil their ballot or something

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Not he says Biden has “committed many crimes” but won’t say what those crimes are.

That will give you an idea of what he’s going to come up with to charge Biden with. And he’ll make it stick too.

Woozythebear,

If Isreal is found guilty of genocide and they will, Bidens roll would be considered aiding in said genocide and would be guilty under international law.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Found guilty of genocide by whom? The ICC? The U.S. is not a signatory.

And if you think Trump, of all people, would try Biden for being complicit in genocide, you need to pick different mushrooms.

Zorsith,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Oh I’m sure he would try Biden, and then be confused when he’s tried for the same thing. He needs a handler to not shove his own foot in his mouth

nova_ad_vitum,

Trump doesn’t care about that and wouldn’t consider it a crime.

Beryl,

That’s a common way of thinking in people with little to no ethics. They think everyone else is the same, and thus if you dig you’re surely going to find something.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a problem with the Republican Party as a whole and why they’re constantly projecting. “We would have done that, so of course they did.”

Lemminary,

So he’s betting on Biden to pardon himself first so he can justify doing it too?

Empricorn,

There’s the small fact that Biden hasn’t committed any crimes and is not facing 90+ indictments.

Lemminary,

I meant preemptively. If Trump is threatening to prosecute him and he has his appointed judges on his side, then they can try some shit. But if Biden, for whatever reason that I don’t think will happen, says that he has pardoned himself and his family, then all that goes away. So then Trump can point to Biden and say, “see? he did it and he’s not guilty! I’m doing it and I’m not guilty!” Which is a bit of a fever dream but it’d be some sort of strategy to cleanse his name in the eyes of the public while staining Biden’s. That was my line of thought, not that I think Biden is guilty of crimes.
