dhork,

There was a lot of effort put in to changing how those machines work, based largely on the work of a few independant researchers in the early 2000’s. Newer machines are more secure, auditable, and have a documented paper trail of all votes that can be recounted. These companies had to be shamed into doing the right thing, but at least they did it.

dhork,

Many machines now are paper based, the machines just scan the paper and deposit it in a lockbox, and the physical paper can be recounted if necessary. These are the machines I use in my district.

The ballot is scanned right in front of you, and if you made a stray mark that would cause the ballot to be invalidated, or it detects an over/under vote, it informs you so that you have a chance to destroy the ballot and re-vote if necessary.

Outside Groups Spent $285,000 Backing Jamaal Bowman. AIPAC Alone Just Dropped Nearly $2 Million to Attack Him. (theintercept.com)

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s super PAC has launched its first ads attacking Rep. Jamaal Bowman in the Democratic primary in New York’s 16th Congressional District. The ads claim that Bowman “has his own agenda” and refuses to work with President Joe Biden....

dhork,

At least we know that when bad stuff is happening, Bowman won’t hesitate to sound the alarm.

dhork,

Yeah, like people in this country would listen to experts. That’s basically admitting you don’t know everything already.

dhork,

The Twitter bird isnt dead, it’s just pining for the fjords

dhork, (edited )

I have it on good authority that there is a Gay Agenda. It’s always just been a Trapper Keeper. They are so organized, after all…

dhork,

He’s legit in that his campaign went through the process to get on the ballot in certain states. That has nothing to do with his chances.

House panel advances Garland contempt after White House blocks access to Biden special counsel tape (apnews.com)

The House Judiciary Committee voted to move forward with an effort to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress hours after the White House blocked access to an audio recording of President Joe Biden’s interview with the special counsel who oversaw an investigation into his handling of classified documents....

dhork, (edited )

This is about that special counsel investigation, where no charges were filed against Biden but the guy said some things about Biden’s memory. The Justice Department already released the full transcript of the interviews with Biden, but the committee has asked for the audio too, and Garland has declined to sent it over.

dhork,

Those voters are all coming to me

In more ways than one…

dhork,

This frequently happens to me when going to Europe from the US. And that’s an overnight flight with a 5+ hour time change to boot,so I am very jetlagged upon arrival. Very often, if there is a room available that was unsold the night before they can accommodate you. But if not, the hotel can hold your bags while you go somewhere to kill a few hours.

If you travel enough to get loyalty program status with one hotel chain, that can help too. Sometimes those higher tiers come with “guaranteed” early checkin. I’m sure that if they are totally sold out you won’t get the early room, but it’s possible someone else had to leave for an early flight and if you have the status they will take care of that room quickly for you.

Matt Gaetz just told everyone he was “Standing Back and Standing By”…

dhork,

Do I understand correctly that they have the full transcript already? For what reason would they need the actual audio, then?

Biden challenges Trump to 2 debates but won’t participate in nonpartisan commission's debates (apnews.com)

Biden’s campaign proposed that the first debate between the presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees be held in late June and the second in September before early voting begins. Trump responded to the letter in an interview with Fox News digital, calling the proposed dates “fully acceptable to me” and joked about...

dhork,

To be fair, though, three debates is excessive this time around. We know where these people stand. The debates are really a chance to assess their mental fitness, and two will be fine for that.

The non-partisan commission shot itself in the foot by not taking early voting into account in its scheduling. If we are going to have debates, it makes no sense to schedule them after voting starts in some states.

dhork,

It’s not Biden who is giving Trump viability as a candidate, it is the Republican voters who are giving him viability as their nominee. They have seen all the stuff he has done and say “We need more of that!”

dhork,

If there’s one thing the Right has done much better than the Left over the last 20+ years, it’s engaging people at the local level. Even if they have to lie to do it. There are lots and lots of school boards all across the country, but it only takes a small amount of money to mount an effective campaign in each one.

The Republican M.O. lately has been to create fake controversies in their media, the run against them. This lady proves it - she was elected based on all the objectionable things she thought the school wad teaching, only to land the job and realize none of what she campaigned on was actually true. She at least had enough critical thinking to realize she was being deceived. Most others would double-down on the alternative facts, so they can keep the money coming in.

dhork,

No, they contain relevant information, and they are important. But they only have meaning until tomorrow’s poll comes out. The one in November is the only one that counts.

Jan. 6 Situation Room Officer Reveals Trump Fans ‘Came That Close’ To Murdering VP In Stunning New Interview (www.mediaite.com)

Former White House Situation Room officer Mike Stiegler revealed that then-President Donald Trump never called down to check on then-Vice President Mike Pence as Trump fans hunted him at the Capitol, and that we were “that close” to losing the VP....

dhork,

He knows it’s a thing, but never watches it because I bet Wolf Blitzer said a mean thing about him that one time.

dhork,

It’s a weird election, some people are so upset with both of them they’re voting for the guy with a dead worm in his brain

dhork,

Maybe you can go a bit lower tech. There are “smart” door locks with a keypad that have Bluetooth, but are not otherwise cloud enabled. Then find a small device you can use as a Bluetooth proxy and position it near the front door, to keep tabs on it. Our lock is from Kwikset, and while there is an app to program it, once it is programmed it is pretty much stand-alone and won’t need the app anymore.

The lock does have Home Assistant integration but I haven’t tried it yet because I haven’t done the Bluetooth Proxy yet.

dhork,

This lock has a keypad, so the kid just needs to remember that. It has a key also, but if the kid never has the key, they can never lose it.
