Made a rambly 30+ minute video with shaky webcam footage documenting my final moments of 3DS online tonight.

It's currently published on YouTube, trying to setup a PeerTube account so maybe I can post more stuff like this on the fediverse in the future. I'll link that in a reply if and when it happens.

@rootcompute Since you were suprised that the only thing they shut off directly were the login servers, here's a quip from many a moon ago when they shut down the original xbox live.

I can't give a technical explanation, other than that there probably isn't a killswitch for everything, and they'll just start slowly dismantling the servers (or letting them run forever unattended until they die for other reasons).

@mid_kid Nice thanks for sharing. That's an interesting story I hadn't heard about.

It just seems silly to shut out connections to the servers but also keep them running indefinitely. But I also think it's silly to shut them down in the first place.

I checked mitsuki.tv on twitch and they still have one screen trading Pokémon on the 3DS so I guess it's still goin for some people

@rootcompute the servers went down and I didn't even have the chance to use the online functionality once 😅

Mostly my own fault, I got my 3DS during the pandemic and after playing Pokémon gen 4, 5, and 6, got bored and got back to my happy place, gen 1 and 2. I didn't even finished Alpha Sapphire (it's a WIP, I'll eventually will). Right now (literally) I'm playing Yellow, trying to complete a living dex to make my inner child proud.

@maxalmonte14 I mostly enjoyed just being able to trade with random strangers around the world (battling to a lesser extent). It sucks, but yea, I think you can still have a fulfilling experience on the 3DS even without modding and fan servers

@rootcompute I always been a loner since there weren't that many kids playing Pokémon around back in the day, but I'm happy projects like Pretendo exist and fans can keep enjoying their favorite games after big companies decide they don't care anymore.

@maxalmonte14 Same here -- especially as an adult. There's only so much that can be taken from us, we will always have our favorite games. Keep on doing what you love

@buru5 I am a sadboy tonight

i'm watching your video while playing PSO. it is making me feel a certain way, but i am not good at quick articulation via social media. i had a 3DS since launch; i traded in my DSi and was disappointed with how shoddy DS games looked on the 3DS (was playing DQV at the time). i didn't start using the online features until Pokemon X/Y came out, which revitalized my love of Pokemon (and then Gen7 killed it again).

@rootcompute i used to live in a very high crime downtown area, and i would play Smash3DS late at night on the outside porch of the home i rented. my friend and i would call each other and time joining the "TEAM ONLINE" queue together so we could get paired with each other (you couldn't form a 'party' and join the queue).

@rootcompute

my wife and i used to sit on that same porch and smoke weed while we played Fantasy Life and Monster Hunter 4U locally.

idk. i'm not so sad about the online, more so: the passing of time in general.

@buru5@mstdn.games avatar

@rootcompute

death of the online is the final nail in the coffin of carefree times when i was twenty-something and things seemed very serious but in hindsight were not serious at all. back when i thought i couldn't form nostalgic experiences any more, but i was wrong, and i'm still forming nostalgic experiences to this day but won't realize it until years later.

@rootcompute

we take this for granted. the hardware? no. what we take for granted is: what was going on in our lives and who we were spending that time with while playing with said hardware. maybe.

or maybe consumerism really has eaten away at our brains and all our nostalgia is company-branded.

@buru5 Fantastic perspective all around. If I had my wits about me, I would have delved more into this kind of subject material in the video.

The thing about the 3DS is I only really got into it after I started my "adult" life post education. I moved away from school friends who played handheld games and didn't know anybody who shared that interest for a long time. I think that's part of why they still don't feel that old to me. The passing of time is a disorienting thing to look back on

@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@buru5 P.S.(O) I will see if I can get back into PSO this week maybe, speaking of nostalgia and the passing of time. Should have some more gaming time freed up now that this is all over

buru5,
@buru5@mstdn.games avatar

@rootcompute no pressure at all but there is a joke in here that involves you having more free time now that you're not tapping 3ds screens all day/night sending hacked pokes.

@buru5 As my girlfriend would say, I'm done poking them all
