When the left caters to the rich, and the right to the poor, a death spiral is sure to emerge in politics.

I think there is explanation enough for people to consider: ”why?”

alberto_cottica,
@alberto_cottica@mastodon.green avatar

@gimulnautti that sounds like an improvement over the current model, where the right caters to the rich and the left caters to the rich too.

@alberto_cottica Democracies work best when there is an interplay between left & right politics.

But from the outside looking in, US sure look like having two right-wing parties jockeying for managerialship of the same politics.

There is a fallacy that the majority can take care of themselves. The root of that fallacy is that there are always much more poor people than there are rich.

TruthSandwich,

@gimulnautti @alberto_cottica

That makes no sense. Yes, the RNC is a right wing party. Far right, actually. But the DNC is a left wing party. Not far left, fortunately.

Are you trying to play the far left edgelord card of “actually, if it’s not anticapitalist, it’s not left wing at all”?

@TruthSandwich @gimulnautti I am just a frustrated voter. And I am pretty old, so I remember when left wing parties in Europe had socialism and nationalisation of large companies as a stated aim, and if that was what you wanted you could vote for a party that represented you. Now the political supply is thin in comparison .

TruthSandwich,

@alberto_cottica @gimulnautti

The lack of extremist choices on the far left is not distressing to me.

Even if you could nominally vote for extremists, they must never win.

@TruthSandwich @gimulnautti with all due respect, that perspective is probably better suited to the US than to Europe. Or the rest of the world, for what matters. If it works for you, great, but beware treating it as universally valid.

TruthSandwich,

@alberto_cottica @gimulnautti

Communism is extremist anywhere, because it’s failed everywhere. Ditto for fascism.

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@TruthSandwich @alberto_cottica I see. From you political compass perhaps, ”edgelord” is an accurate term. But thay compass only applies if I am American, which I’m not.

I’m running no game here. Just a civilian from a country with a different political system. Which makes me an outsider looking in. I’m an observer, not a participant.

TruthSandwich,

@gimulnautti @alberto_cottica

America has the full range of political views. It also has a two-party system which serves to marginalize the extremists and deprive them of power so that we can have a stable, functional government.

In the last decade or so, this has come under attack from both populist extremes, with the RNC falling to its and the DNC taking damage while defending itself from its own.

See the rant I linked to above for more detail.

@TruthSandwich @alberto_cottica In quashing extremism two parties are indeed better than one. The two parties instead are most often preferred by your first-past-the-post voting system. Fractional representations are indeed at risk of one-party results, like has happened in Hungary. Generally though, the result is a more balanced view where minorities tend to get representation also.

TruthSandwich,

@gimulnautti @alberto_cottica

Well, the advantage of a parliamentary system is that people get to vote for a party that closes matches their views, even when those views are extreme. This keeps the lunatics happier, even though their fringe parties wind up with minimal power.

The disadvantage, as shown by Hungary, is that parliamentary governments can be very unstable and the extremists can take over.
