Ok, let's make a poll for community.

How do you call the program combining object files into an executable?

@mgorny It is usual to call it linjer.
But it can be called "packer", or even comPILEr.

@mgorny link editor to me sounds more like patchelf.

mgorny,

@lanodan, I guess I'm weird because for me "ld.so" is the linker, and "ld" is the link editor ;-).

@mgorny Yet, ld doesn't have link edition but only creation, right? Like grep redirected to a file isn't an editor.

ld.so for me is the dynamic linker.
ld is the normal(executable?) linker.

@mgorny @lanodan Interesting, I don't believe I've ever heard the term "link editor" in the context of executables.

Intuitively I would have thought that a "link editor" has something to do with HTML... or maybe the little dialog box that pops up in a GUI word processor when you want to turn some text into a hyperlink.

mgorny,

@diazona @lanodan, yeah, perhaps I was working in unusual context. Now that I grep, it seems that BSD actually calls ld.so the link editor, so the other way around.

vjon,

@mgorny @lanodan When I need to distinguish the two, I call ld.so the loader.

If I am horribly off the mark, please tell me.
