@jynersolives one thing I like about miles is that 60mph is a mile a minute. Before common GPS I would use the assumption that I was averaging 60mph to continously estimate the time remaining in my trip.
I was usually going faster, so I got to satisfaction of beating my estimate.
@jynersolives@ManitouRyan TIL it is indeed a mess: gallons, quarts, pints, ounces, drams. 2 of something in one other, 8 of something else in something else, 4 of those per two that go into…. Mess is an understatement, it is madness. A US gallon is 231 cubic inches: WHY?
@jynersolives yeah I fear miles are just hanging there for few old people who might get hard attack realizing they have been holding metric system back for no good reason.
@jynersolives
UK so for sheer awkwardness miles for long distances, but metric for short ones, unless it’s height, in which case still feet and inches for most people, even those only taught metric at school.
Milk will be sold in pints & petrol in litres, but recipes will say ml and people still talk about mpg for fuel.
Although you can just say how many miles a litre will get.
Yes, it is pretty ridiculous.
