Today we learned that our elderly neighbour(the man) went to sleep for the last time in the hospital :sad_cat:
A little while ago he was fallen again and broke the upper leg and got into the hospital. He was in much pain and it went worse quickly unfort
He did get to say goodbye to the family and was in reasonable state for that❤️
It feels kinda weird since I was helping them out recently with (something simple) like the TV and now she's living somewhere else and he is basically gone🕯️
It occurred to me that for various reasons the GPS network we rely on to find out way around these days could fail. If this were to happen, and depending on a lot of other factors, printed maps—on paper or other materials—could become quite valuable. To those who can read them, at least. Do you have any printed maps? Road map? Topo map?
@qurlyjoe Gen Xer, so well-versed in the use of printed maps, but it’s been a long time since I last had to use one, and most recent uses were topo maps for backcountry adventures. I don’t even own paper maps anymore, but if the GPS system went down tomorrow, I wouldn’t be too worried, as I can get any place I’d need to by memory anyway.
Apparently, the cyber truck is the equivalent of a rare exotic plant from a different climate … nice to look at, but riddled with problems … and really not able to function right unless it is within a very narrow set of parameters.
It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to hold onto that majority in the House, particularly once you factor in all those angry women who normally don't vote coming to the polls over the abortion issue.
@GhostOnTheHalfShell@tofugolem Or they just want to retire? Lamborn, for example, is almost 70 years old and has been in office for 17 years. It's not actually normal for most people to want to keep working into their 80's and beyond.
I drove out to South Park this past Saturday to try to photograph some of the bison out at the state wildlife area out there. Of course, the bison weren't cooperating this day, and there were none in sight from either of the access points I started from. So, landscape photos it was... I shot this near Antero Reservoir. I felt the scene captured how barren some of the landscape can feel out there, especially in winter; barren, but beautiful.
So, Substack… I was really disappointed and annoyed by the company’s response to the racist, hateful content on the site. As an author on the platform, I now have some thinking to do. But please can folks not put pressure on indie writers to immediately quit; most of us are just trying to get our work out there in a tough market, we have put a lot of time/effort into the platform, and maybe trying to earn a bit of money if we are lucky. This really sucks. But as I say, I will ponder my options.
@ricmac If Medium was smart, they'd be trying HARD to get Substack publishers over to their platform. This could be their moment to shine and take the lead.
@jynersolives I finally got a PlayStation this year, and my recent addiction has been the old Spider-man PS4 game. About to move on to the Miles Morales game before I go buy Spider-man 2. Will have Jedi Survivor coming up, too.
At first, #Bluesky was nice because it seemed like just the fun parts of Twitter were replicating there. As it matures and gets more users, though, it feels like the toxic aspects are now seeping in, too. Mastodon definitely seems a bit more chill.
@mackuba@marcosflobo "Mastodon is for those who hated Twitter and Bluesky is for those who liked it." I think you hit the nail on the head. I liked Twitter before the car guy took it over, and Bluesky feels more like those old days of Twitter. Plus, a lot of my old Tweeps have created accounts there; over here, not so much. I do wish they'd enable some basic functionality like hashtags and gif's, though. How hard can that be?
I'm fine with privatizing the FDIC and letting banks buy it. Oh, but one little caveat: we remove limited liability for banks. Shareholders are now 100% personally responsible for bank losses.
Private banks can be trusted not to wreck the economy, right? So what's the problem?
@maxkennerly People need to stop treating Dimon like he’s some economic sage. He’s just another run-of-the-mill capitalist trying to line his own pockets by maximizing his company’s profits, trying to get rid of any regulation that might hamper that.
Increasingly I'm finding #LinkedIn to be the best of the "normy" social media platforms. #Mastodon is where I have conversations, LinkedIn is where I follow industry trends and try not to become nauseated with the hustle culture nonsense.
I don't see how #Threads or #BlueSky really fit in to my mental conceptions of what I want out of social media. But LinkedIn, eh, it serves a purpose.
If any #lawfedi or @law folks are similarly straddling both worlds, look me up.
@andrew@law I can't be on LinkedIn for more than two minutes without being nauseated by the hustle culture nonsense. For me, it's nothing more than an address book I can access if I'm ever looking for a job.
@ryanhoulihan A while back, we had to move form CO back to MN for a while. We kept our house in CO and rented it out to friends while we were in MN, as we knew we'd eventually move back. Good thing we did, as that house would have cost us over double to buy again when we moved back. We rented to our friends for just enough to cover the mortgage. They were happy and so were we. Were we evil?
@ryanhoulihan Yup, because your utopia doesn’t exist right now, and we would have been screwed out of having an affordable place to move back to if we didn’t.
@ryanhoulihan Whatever, man. You'll never get from point A to point Z if you don't recognize all the steps that have to happen in between. If all landlords stopped leasing their properties tomorrow, you'd have a housing crisis, not a housing solution. I'll go ahead and unfollow you per your request, as you're clearly not interested in any sort of nuanced discussion about what it takes to get to the desired end state (which I ultimately agree with you about). Cheers.
Trumpism has all the trappings of a classic cult of personality: a charismatic figure at the center who is worshiped as a modern messiah by his followers; a leader who seemingly can do no wrong, even while engaged in patterns of criminal behavior to grift money from them; a master manipulator who controls the behavior, thoughts, information, and emotions of his flock.
@georgetakei I read an article about this recently. They posited that there's both good news and bad news here. The good news is that the size of the MAGA cult has peaked and will decline in the coming years. The bad news is that it's going to take the cult members actually dying off to thin the herd (and they tend to be older, so that will come sooner than you think); there's no real hope of deprogramming them.
I put a set of Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M tires on my new bike. I rode them yesterday and they were awesome. I wasn't sure if I'd like them so they have tubes in them now. I'll need to get them set up tubeless this weekend.
@tom@bryanhansel Question for you guys, as I'm new to tubeless (new bike came with 'em)... Do you just carry plugs with your for flat repair, or still carry tubes, too? How easy is it to do a plug repair on the trail?
