@eniko My A/C unit explicitly has a "sleep" function. Increases the downtime cycle time (more time w/o compressor running) and reduces fan speed.
A Dyson standing fan has a full gradient knob, it's not stepped, and the fan unit itself is tiny, in the base, not a giant spinning blade. At low speeds, it's barely noticeable over my HDD arrays. 😜
@eniko rowenta fans have a sleep/night mode which is very silent. And still creates a small breeze, perfect for sleeping. And also a turbo mode to evacuate heat or bring cool air from outside. And a remote. Really great fans.
