Here is a cool little gadget I'd never heard of before. It's a temperature datalogger. It lasts 60 days. Sadly I think it may be disposable (but I'd imagine rechargeable versions exist. )

Suppose you are shipping fruit across the country and you've paid extra to have the trucks chilled down to 65F. How do you know they didn't ship them at 75F and only lower the temp fully just before arrival?

Hide this bad boy in your shipment, then check the USB for data on arrival.

They cost about $4 each.

@futurebird These things are designed as to prevent spoiled foods or materials to be accepted.

There are also chemical indicators that'll turn red if ever defrosted [ https://www.foodprocessing.com.au/content/processing/hot-product/nigk-cryomark-cold-shipment-thermal-indicators-207745241 ] or otherwise discolour when going below or above certain temperatures [ https://www.shockwatchuk.com/shop/shockwatch/coldmark-freeze-temperature-indicator-stickers/ ] which is critical for a lot of and .

@futurebird
For example some require close to the moment of injection or they'll spoil.

Which is why a lot of them will require appointments as staff needs to prepare them hours ahead and defrost the doseage.

@futurebird As sad as it sounds, this isn't because it's desired but because it's the cheapest solution to "have audotable temperature logging".

Unlike :bitcoin: it's not per design in the sense that only justifies their existance...

I had a similar sensor I was looking at to do experimental monitoring for a closed-ecology project. Because you could drop it inside, so you don't need to worry about connecting wires -- just take it out at the end.

But yeah, disposable/single-use.

I suppose it must have a coin battery inside. Could maybe figure out how to replace it?

fowl2,

@futurebird please don’t tell me the only format it outputs the data is… PDF‽

BalooUriza,

@futurebird Can confirm that these things also come in reusable varieties and are widely deployed in laboratory environments.

@futurebird that’s really cool! I’m very curious what they’ve packed inside that lets them hit a price point of $4. Maybe a thermistor and some good wishes.

I’m with you on sensors.

I'm fascinated by things like this for reasons I can't possibly articulate.

I almost bought one just to try it out and take it apart... but instead I'll just tell ya'll about it... I bet there are other interesting ways to use such a device. For example... you could detect if a chair is being sat in or not by putting it inside of a pillow...

There's probably pressure sensitive ones like it. Vibration sensitive and so forth.
Here's an analog version of g force meter.

    Same!
So many things one could do with gadgets like that. Place them around the garden and house to see variation. Check the effect of those people who keep opening the fridge. See if the dog stays on its bed all night. See if my habit of venting the house in the morning and then closing up at 7:30 really does keep it cooler all day, etc.

I would like to see it miniaturized though. Swallow the thing and see temp changes as it travels

There is something wrong with you but I think the same thing is wrong with me.

Urge to put sensors on everything is ... hard to resist.

Have you ever used or played with SCADA software and field sensors?
It is way more addictive than any game

Also ... are you tempted to just buy all kinds of sensors to attach or link to your smartphone

.. also do you have the Physics Toolbox app on you phone

    ... also ... :)

    bandreghetti,

@futurebird @mloxton Inside me there are 2 wolves.

One of them urges me to put sensors in everything.

The other one hates giving away my data to 3rd parties.

These offline sensor logging thingies are great food for both of them c:

@futurebird @mloxton Check out SensorPush if you want to nerd out over your freezer - why so much variation freezer why????

    RickRae,

    @uguisubari

I've been using SensorPush since the crowdfunder; good stuff. Quite a few around the house and yard. The one sitting atop the thermostat makes me ask the same question as you with your freezer. Sometimes the thermostat just seems to lose track of what it's supposed to be doing!

Is your freezer one sitting out by itself? I have mine in a "thermal mass" so it rejects transients from opening the door, etc.
