stevestreza,

This month's haul:

stevestreza,

Don't forget: Giving a musician $10 is worth as much as streaming their song 1,000 times on Apple Music and 2,500 times on Spotify.

FuchsReinard,

@stevestreza

so $10 is way to much?

solarkraft,

@stevestreza I kinda like using Bandcamp

ladyparabellum,

@stevestreza I stream music. But once a month I track down the socials of one that I've really over played that month and tip at least a hundred dollars. I've been doing that for at least the last five years. I'm not suggesting that's the right number, just it ought to be some number.

Tweetfiction,

@stevestreza This is one more reason why I buy vinyl, go to concerts and buy merch.

samuelprudencio,

@stevestreza @muchanchoasado what about buying a CD today?

stevestreza,
abigailstarling,

@stevestreza smh why didn’t I get a notification for this tag, anyway you’re cute 💖

@stevestreza
What is vtuber Stuff? 🤔

@stevestreza

We need to build a better model, they do exist, just probably need traction and awareness from listeners as to where their money gets to.

SEGFAULT,

@stevestreza yea incidentally this is why I don't put my music on streaming sites. It takes away your power as a listener and mine as an artist by making the value be in the service not the music.

Incidentally no one ever buys my music on bandcamp either :(

OkieSpaceQueen,

@SEGFAULT @stevestreza send me a link. I like new music I'll check it out.

@SEGFAULT @OkieSpaceQueen @stevestreza Got another interested buyer here!

¿What about €?
@bonifartius

nhoj,

@stevestreza yeah – I buy my favorite bands' albums just to support them, then I continue to stream their music in good conscience.

aismallard,

@stevestreza @cjrando I much prefer having an on-disk library for music (offline listening at no extra charge, no bandwidth consumption), and Bandcamp is very convenient for adding songs directly, and it even compensates artists better

tsyum,
@tsyum@thepit.social avatar

@aismallard @stevestreza @cjrando mind sharing what software you use to play it? I’ve been streaming (apple/spotify) for a while now. Windows groove was a poor experience as i recall. iTunes? I’d love to support musicians better

stevestreza,

@tsyum @aismallard @cjrando The Bandcamp mobile app has it built in. On desktop you can use the website but it's far from ideal (or just download the files and use whatever music player you like, which is what I do).

AKawaiiDragon,

@stevestreza there's a tool to search your Spotify playlist that will take you to the Bandcamp page for the artist, I've used it before and it's super handy versus manually searching it https://hypem.com/merch-table

philsherry,

@stevestreza I had no idea there was that much difference between fees across the two platforms. Outrageous.

ADHD makes me a good fan because I buy the physical product to gather dust on a shelf and then listen to it on Apple Music on repeat for months solid.

numist,

@philsherry @stevestreza These are average comp numbers, which includes Spotify's free listening tier. If you pay for Spotify Premium they're a lot closer (though Spotify still lags slightly)

avatastic,

@stevestreza I really hope bandcamp don't screw artists out of purchases, as that's where I prefer to throw my $ towards artists.

kerfuffle,
@kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

@avatastic
As an artist I can say Bandcamp is very fair and transparent to artists, and their availability is ace. Some Fridays they forego their share of the purchase amount altogether. Only downside is that not many people like paying with Paypal.
@stevestreza

JoanMastodon,

@stevestreza
How the fuck do they survive?

ShadSterling,

@stevestreza whenever possible I subscribe to musicians I like on Patreon

whatzaname,

@stevestreza i have literally just mailed a check to artists whose music I have downloaded. I never use apple or spotify or any pay service. I strip all ads from youtube and thank the artists personally.

billseipel,

@stevestreza So can I just give them the money instead?

tim_lavoie,
@tim_lavoie@cosocial.ca avatar

@stevestreza OK, how about Tidal? (Not sure where they are on the spectrum)

Setok,
@Setok@attractive.space avatar

@stevestreza that $10 probably gets you the whole album, versus just one song, so the comparison isn't quite right. Is it feasible you'd listen to a good album over 100 times in your lifetime? I'd say yes, but it would take some time.

Having said that, buying also has other benefits: a label can't just pull the plug and have the album disappear from your library. I listen to a lot of music which is not on Spotify...

@stevestreza
Such true Words, totally agreed! 👍😃

I still don't use Music streaming and never had because all Music I want to listen on the go i have stored locally on my Smartphone or sometimes in my Nextcloud. 😉

Besides that I still buy Songs and Albums instead of streaming, because it's more convenient to me and without any form of a recurring Subscription. 😁

One time payment, owning for a Lifetime instead of just a License for limited use. 😏

0x2c4,

@stevestreza @CaptainJanegay that’s why I purchase music only, no streaming subscription 😎

Joris,

@stevestreza
Yeez. Or 5000 times on YouTube music, apparently.
Plus, streaming has a higher carbon footprint than local playback. https://producerhive.com/music-marketing-tips/streaming-royalties-breakdown/

liquor_american,

@stevestreza And bandcamp.com makes this very easy to do if the musician in question is set up there !

pairko,

@stevestreza
Or to pay for parking at a concert!

pinky,

@stevestreza I haven't recently learned how important giving $1, $2, or $10 can make a bigger difference for musicians. I'm buying music again.

genebean,

@stevestreza Introducing them to and/or @StevenB’s The Split Kit and Music Side Project can quickly bring in more money that Apple Music of Spotify thanks to the model.

woolie,
@woolie@mastodon.social avatar

@stevestreza @WillRobinson buying their music on Bandcamp.com is so much better.

crunchysteve,

@stevestreza @Weru

Too true!

blake,

@stevestreza I think the number's lower on Tidal but it's still there. A nice side gig for someone who makes music.

dorzig,
@dorzig@mastodon.social avatar

@stevestreza You are a saint.

edmonde,
@edmonde@mstdn.es avatar

@stevestreza I wonder how much will they get from an LP purchase. It has to be better than in the old days, right?

EdanOsborne,
@EdanOsborne@mstdn.social avatar

@stevestreza And that is one of the great many reasons I still use CDs.

Also, I was born in the mid-2000s.

lobau,
@lobau@noodle.social avatar

@stevestreza
Tidal is marginally better, this is why I use it when I stream. Most of the time, mp3 downloaded from bandcamp 👍

Strabo,

@stevestreza But all the valuable exposure! Simply lost in the rain!

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@stevestreza @distractal
.. or buying at least 10 of their CDs (if they're at a regular record label and not so big that they get special conditions)

tinbee,

@stevestreza
That Windows96 one is really compelling

AlgoCompSynth,

@stevestreza TIL there is Witch Pop

Ralph,

@stevestreza download Erik Hall’s two LPs and F.S. Blum’s Music for Wobblers.
