Microsoft Least Valuable Professional.

I care/know a bit about

  • Sustainability (there's a fusion reactor in the sky!)
  • Free Software (by far the most
    sustainable type of software)
  • Ecosystem strategy/marketing ("how do we get people to use this?")
  • UX (developers are users!)
  • Web Development (the least bad application platform, probably)
  • Photography (lately mostly slow-motion videos)
  • Memery (RIP, Cheems)

solarkraft,

@Mastodon 14£ for shipping?! Why the f*** would you ship from the UK?!

solarkraft,

@Gargron it's such a shame that the launch was a dud because I love the motives.
Is there a chance of a second batch with better logistics?

solarkraft,

@Gargron Awesome! Thank you!

I want to bring together people who believe that improving can be powerful for putting into the hands of more people, so I'm founding a group called !
Let's see where this goes; come be a founding member and share your thoughts at or in the Matrix space -ux:matrix.org!

@ivory By the way, THANK YOU.

It’s rare that developers truly consider how app behavior affects user experience. I was deeply engaged in writing a post. Then poof app crashed.

Realization hits. Expletive hurled. How will I regain my emotional state to reconstruct the reply? Sadness.

Relaunch app and find original post. Start reply. Oh wait… might it? I tap ⚙️ and relief washes over me. It kept the draft. These are moments that mark great apps.

solarkraft,

@btaroli @ivory These are the things that actually make software great. Sure, it shouldn't have crashed, but they planned for the worst and realized how valuable your post was to you. This is the kind of user-focused thinking I'd love to see more in !

After a long time of thinking about it, I'm strongly considering retiring this account. Here's why, and what I'm likely to do. I'm open to feedback from followers on alternatives.

I've used the name emacsen online since roughly 1999, and I still see myself associated with it, and making a single user instance was a no brainer.

But these days, I run an entire other instance, and a vast majority of my posts are from @serge

solarkraft,

@emacsen Alright, following you over there! I wish you a lot of success in running the site.
However I do wonder what makes the Fediverse unsafe for jews in your view.

Going to try posting on Mastodon more.

To help us raise more funds for our development efforts, we are launching a new line of merchandise for Mastodon including t-shirts, mugs, enamel pins, and stickers.

solarkraft,

@Mastodon Finally actually pretty merch! Much better than just a logo!

Someone I peripherally know tries to look for an app on (per my recommendation).
The screen is staying blank and they get no search results.
After basic troubleshooting they give up and I feel a bit dumb for having suggested the route.

solarkraft,

@jr @ifixcoinops The F-Droid situation that just happened is supposed to be an example for things that happen like this every day, around the clock, with hundreds of pieces of FOSS software.

I sadly don't have the energy to get involved in the development process of many projects to fix small bugs (I have tried/will try).

I am mainly trying to contribute by describing approaches through which FOSS projects could, quite possibly, be useful to many more people (with not much extra effort!).

solarkraft,

@jr @ifixcoinops In a way I would like these things to change, but in general I don't see myself making demands for my own interest, but the interest of getting the project adopted by more people (which of course comes with many positive effects).

If the project maintainers don't want that, that's entirely fair - catering to everyone is not their job.

solarkraft,

@jr @ifixcoinops But if you do want to cater to a large user base (I feel like F-Droid does want to spread the FOSS gospel far and wide), even with a small team, maybe it makes sense to ask yourself what to prioritize: Fixing bugs that make the software useless for 20% of people (made-up number) or building a minor feature (that will improve general usability by a few %)?

Looks like July 6 is going to be a bit wild on the old fediverse.

Or maybe they actually decided on the protocol Bluesky is using and then we have a whole new can of worms 😂

solarkraft,

@matt I think them joining Bluesky would be worse for the fediverse. Bluesky would be an actual, direct competitor fragmenting the "federated social networking" space.

Compared to all other clients I've used, for iOS feels phenomenal! It's the first one I don't dread using and its existence is giving me hope for the ecosystem again. That team is very much on the right track.

Someone said to me, "your job is posting on Twitter" and I was offended because NO my job is posting on THE

(amongst other things)

solarkraft,

@haubles Hehe! Communication is important! Without you I wouldn't know about Fastly's Fediverse involvement.

So I guess the lesson here is don't piss off someone who owns a machine. I don't know who Andy is, or what they did, but I know they're a dick, and that this fact is stuck all over

solarkraft,

@hl Ahh, fun times

It’s that time of year again to remind all of you to cancel your adobe subscription, tick the “too expensive” box and get a 50% discount for the entire year. Been doing this every year for a long time and works every time.

solarkraft,

@parsa @amshepherd @wbm312 Sure, but that's not the only reason. Watch a random Photoshop tutorial and try to replicate it with Gimp, it's often not going to be anywhere as easy.

There are some decent proprietary alternatives at this point, but they're also "meh" at supporting Linux. ... and also proprietary.

solarkraft,

@parsa @amshepherd @wbm312 I doubt that it covers all of its features. I'll believe you that it can cover one use case.

Don't get me wrong: I love FOSS very much. But there are some people that seem to think that FOSS can do everything some proprietary software can and everyone can just switch without any hassle. Not the case.
