🎧 Full disclosure: As much as I go on about loving music and the memories it brings, I've only ever heard 2 songs by , start to finish.

"Truckin'" which no one could actually avoid hearing, and "A Touch of Grey" in the late 80s—on the radio.

And I've never eaten "Jerry Garcia" ice cream either.

Does this make me un-American? 🤷‍♂️

@DemocracySpot Ditto. I once went to a Grateful Dead concert at UCLA…it lasted at least 3 hours and I was bored out of my mind.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@portcitystudios @DemocracySpot I REALLY love the song 'Althea' but cannot imagine sitting through a quarter of -- let alone an entire -- Grateful Dead concert. Also, I hate the smell of pot so just kill me now haha.

@Holberg

NO one is showing up with love for the Dead or to tell me "You just don't get it" or "You had to be there" which I kinda expected.

To be clear, I'm stating a personal musical/cultural preference and not trying to harsh anyone's buzz, man.

@DemocracySpot Oh, I get that. My nephew LOVED them and I loved that for him. One of those things you have to get -- and that's probably what made the experience special.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot My nephew also loved pot. They kinda go together haha.

Old joke…

What did one Deadhead say to the other Deadhead when they ran out of pot at the Dead show?

“Man! … This music SUCKS!”

    Oh, Sunny. You've mis-read me. I'm 65 and a lover of a wide range of music. I was there, IOW. :-)

    Yes, each generation has its challenges. I'm a boomer who never owned a home. Couldn't afford it and didn't sell anybody's future out or down the road. My dad was selling real estate in the '80s. I remember the rates being as high 17%. I wasn't around then. It was just a point of lament during phone calls home.

    @DemocracySpot I really like the song Terrapin Station, but I had a friend that played it well.

    @DemocracySpot

    Wait, I do know the Casey Jones song (?) but I'm not sure if I've never listened to it all the way through. On second thought I've probably never sat through "Truckin'" all the way.

    DemocracySpot,
    @DemocracySpot@mstdn.social avatar

    @billyjoebowers

    I worked at a no-format FM station in the late 70s and never played the Dead. Alan, the guy who was on-air before me, played "Truckin" a lot, but no other songs. That's where/how I first hear it.

    Crystal_Fish_Caves,

    @DemocracySpot @billyjoebowers I used to see a guy that was into the Grateful Dead when I was into the Dead Kennedys. He would say, they are amazing! they can play the same song for an hour and a half! and I would say, that sounds horrific Dead Kennedys can finish a song in less than 2 minutes! and then he did the most sexually nauseating thing I have ever seen; Fan Dancing. Like throwing spoiled milk on my libido. Never saw him again. : )

    A friend of mine's daughter was going to see some jam bands and my friend says to her "So you're going to go watch some guys rehearse?"

    DemocracySpot,
    @DemocracySpot@mstdn.social avatar

    @billyjoebowers

    "Jam band" is the term I left out. Who are contemporaries in that "genre" if it is one? And do they still play hacky-sack at these shows?

    @Crystal_Fish_Caves

    billyjoebowers,
    @billyjoebowers@mastodon.online avatar

    @DemocracySpot @Crystal_Fish_Caves

    There's a lot of them, a good way to make a living, picking up the crowd the Dead left behind. Even some bands the aren't really in that genre but lean that way just for the crowd.

    billyjoebowers,
    @billyjoebowers@mastodon.online avatar

    @DemocracySpot

    Same. Pretty sure I'm not missing anything.

    DemocracySpot,
    @DemocracySpot@mstdn.social avatar

    @billyjoebowers

    There was a *lot of pressure in SF in the 90s from the hacky-sack posse who just couldn't accept my ambivalence, but I stood firm, proud of my un-Dead status.

    @mentallyalex @DemocracySpot @billyjoebowers I have a confession. Classic, jam band rock like The Dead, Pink Floyd, etc. is my least favorite kind of music. I'm somewhat ok with the Doors cause you have to respect a band with an organ, but yeah.. No.. Not my thing. Not into the sound and many of their songs are too long. Songs shouldn't be longer than 5 minutes (sole exception is AWOLNATION Knights of Shame. Best 11 minute song ever!)

    Another one in the un-Dead column. Thanks, Queen. x

    I am very similar actually. I do like Pink Floyds - The Wall. I like some of The Doors shorter things. 😆

    But I like EDM... so shrug. My musical tastes are just utterly and tragically shattered. It's fun, it keeps thinks fresh. 😆

    @mentallyalex @DemocracySpot @billyjoebowers I'm also not a fan of EDM. Especially, if there are no lyrics. The only lyric free music I like is classical. That's why Blues > Jazz for me every time.
