Hollywood liberal, Bollinger bolshevik, choose your favorite pejorative. Turn-ons include film/TV, music, civil rights, architecture, cars, travel, food, gin martinis. Turn-offs include broccoli, bigots and spectacularly awful people like some billionaires who come to mind. He/Him.

I sometimes hear people talk about "The Monoculture" of the past, and I don't think they know what they're talking about.

Lots of the past gets retro modded to fit the narrative of now. Always has.

When people talk about music of the 80s they rarely mention any of the music my friends and I listened to. And it was mostly not super obscure, most of it was on major labels. Back when major labels did that sort of thing.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@billyjoebowers What were you guys listening to?

Y'all I just made myself feel so old, hubs looked up top 100 music from 2001, 2011, 2021, and today and the amount of music I could recognize decreased by significantly. I recognized probably 70% of 2001 and decreasing as I went on. BUT I blame the internet, I can listen to exactly the kind of music I want with no dependence on the radio, but also I'm old!

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr I used to be the guy who could’ve worked in A&R. I knew who everyone ‘new’ was because I’d already seen them at clubs on the Sunset Strip. Made mixtapes of music most people still haven’t heard 20 or 30 years later. Went to the Grammys.

But then I turned 40. And started listening almost exclusively to the music of my ‘70s and ‘80s youth. Haven’t even heard of half the acts in the Top 40. I can’t really blame the internet. I just got old haha.

As someone who has to work like hell to lose every single pound, I was gobsmacked when a friend said he’s dropped seven pounds in a week.

Me: How do you even do that?
He: I go to the gym a lot.
Me: I go to the gym a lot.
He: I barely eat.
Me: I barely eat.
He: Oh, yeah, well, and I’m taking Ozympic.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@Jonathanglick No, I just very-annoyingly-for-a-foodie-and-drinkie don’t need many calories to exist. Perfectly satisfied on a regular schedule of small meals that are mainly whole grains and produce at home with a very judicious mix of everything when I dine out. It works for me because I really don’t feel hungry between meals and have lots of willpower.

Anyway, I’ve always been jealous of those guys who stop drinking a Coke each day and drop right back to college weight. Are you one of those?

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@Jonathanglick All of the above is why I think Ozympic might not even do anything for me. In the sense that I understand it helps get people to where I already am in not feeling like I need much food and having no problem eating limited portions.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@Jonathanglick Oh, damn, LOWER than college weight. You’ve set a bar I didn’t even know existed haha. Well done you!

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@Jonathanglick At the end of the day, I think everything is down to that math. I just have a body that’s especially uncooperative given how much I make that math happen haha.

A deeply enjoyable mashup -- especially since vintage performance footage of KISS, Earth Wind & Fire and the Emotions matches really nicely.

'I Was Made for Loving You' mashed up with 'Boogie Wonderland'

That KISS album -- Dynasty (1979) -- made me wish more disco had incorporated rock elements.

And disco elements were a natural for KISS not just because of the era. The other major acts on their label Casablanca (Neil Bogart, good god THERE'S a limited series waiting to happen) were Donna Summer and Village People.

Young Mats' favorite track on Dynasty -- back before we knew what they looked like -- was 'Sure Know Something' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSURhxNYmDw

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

And while my brain is also thinking about all that idiotic satanic panic -- this country's religious conservatives have always been so lame -- it's important that you know Donny Most (Ralph Malph on HAPPY DAYS) guest-starred as a KISS-like singer on CHiPs haha.

What is the thing(s) that attracts you to a person romantically or otherwise?

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr I'm most drawn -- generally -- to smart, witty, secure people. Clever company that's not angling for anything but a good time.

And god help me if this manifests in the form of a leggy blonde -- particularly, modern iterations of Sloane Rangers or Hitchcock's ice queens.

Made a quick stop at the carwash on Mother’s Day and—who cares about the new Bentleys and Porsches?—dragged poor Mom over to look at this Subaru SVX being serviced next door.

An oddball sports car from the ‘90s. Most notable for that side window design. Mom, astutely: ‘Wouldn’t that interfere with outward vision?’

A black 1990s Subaru SVX is a sports car with rear seat and a hatchback, from the side.

(For the record, the carwash was Mom’s idea. She wanted me to try the guys she uses.

And she has always indulged my automotive fanaticism. I’ve told this story before, but she—for instance—once told me she was always sure I’d be out on the front lawn when I was three to watch Sammy Davis Jr drive by. I asked if I’d been a particular fan of his. ‘Oh, no,’ she said, ‘you liked his Rolls-Royce.’)

@Jonathanglick And I DO LIKE HIM. Just not as much as his car haha.

Okay, since I'm on laundry today, a little story.

When hubs and I first got married, we were very much enjoying our little Honeymoon Bubble, and we were being lazy as Hell. We didn't do many chores, but the laundry we really let go. We weren't wearing many clothes at home anyway, so why bother. Anyhow, after weeks we finally reached the swimming suit bottoms situation, and decided it was time. It was loads and loads of laundry that needed done, so I had my husband back the trunk of the car up to a window of the house, then he popped the trunk, and I started tossing laundry out of the window into the trunk. We went to the bank, got about $30 bucks in quarters, and found the emptiest laundry mat we could, and did it all in one fell swoop. We folded it all and loaded it back into the car using those wheeled laundry carts. We never let it get that bad again, and decided it was time to be adults, and do regular chores, but it still makes me laugh imagining what the neighbors and the laundry attendant thought.

Feel free to share your own laundry story, if you feel like it, I love hearing people's stories!

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Haha great story—and I get the logic leading there!

My embarrassment as an adult who’d never done laundry until moving out was not knowing there’s a lint thingamajig on the dryer you must clear off regularly.

Fortunately, someone alerted me to this rather quickly when she discovered an absurdly thick layer of lint. I was grateful for the intel even if it came with an exasperated denunciation of how easy I’d had it growing up. Oh, lord, her eyes when I explained I was new to laundry.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@samueljohnson @RickiTarr Haha perfect sitcom moment!

If you wash and dry a load of laundry, you also have to be prepared to fold it, and put it away. It's not really helping otherwise.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Haha I hate clutter and this having been there for even 15 minutes is already annoying me, but…I’ve only got myself to blame because I live alone.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr I can only imagine the scale of it all when it’s multiple loads from multiple people haha.

This afternoon’s nostalgic purchase: A 1959 edition of the first Hardy Boys book—the same cover design as when I was checking these out of the library in the early ‘80s.

A minor trauma as an adult was learning there’s no such person as Franklin W Dixon. Simply a name invented by a publisher for any number of ghostwriters.

Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr I’m in Las Vegas.

Pros: It’s great—very livable. Choose a nice suburb and you can forget the Strip/Downtown exist if you like. But they’re only 20 minutes away if you want to go. Decent weather most of the year. By many standards it’s very affordable and there’s barely any traffic. Great restaurant scene. All your friends come to visit in play mode.

Cons: June-July-August are HOT. A transient town—you kinda have to keep making friends. Not much in the way of culture. GOP governor.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Haha yeah. Between my hometown—LA—and here I’m spoiled for choice. And as much as I dine out, there’s still so much I haven’t even gotten to! Like, just the other night, a manager at Bouchon was giving me a list of some Chinatown spots I have to hit—haven’t yet been to any of them.
