Yep, that's what the West reaped from Reaganomics and "government is the problem" thinking. Don't like it? Too bad, shit's locked in hard. Anything else is "socialist."
@dyckron I'd argue that there has always only been two classes, the capitalist class and the working class. But there was a time when the capitalist class at least felt the need to give the working class the ability to have a decent standard of living, hence the supposed Middle Class. Not so much anymore. The mask is off and as you say, has been since Reagan and Thatcher.
@jezebelkat@dyckron We figured out that capitalism was a dog that was easily heeled by effective government in the 40s and 50s and 60s. Then the fascists went to work undermining democracy to the point where in the 80s Reagan was able to sell the rediculous trickle down theory and convince the electorate gov't was the problem. The leashe was off and the dog was let lose. We now get to reap what was sown.
@jezebelkat@dyckron There is no great mystery on how to combat these issues. Gov't needs to reclaim its role and effectively tax big capital. They also need to boldly reestablish themselves as regulators, work that was gleefully abondoned when politically expedient. The problem is tax has become a politically toxic word and nobodies interested in regulating corporate donors.
@jezebelkat@dyckron Never has, never will. The other great myths that were propigated during this era: Free markets actually exist and they're a silver bullet for every problem. Both are lies.
