rachelcholst,

Trying to learn more about Spanish history and Kingdoms of Faith was a bust. (Almost exclusive focus on dynasties and war rather than cultural history, and barely discusses Jews?)

So let's try another angle. Anyone got a good cultural history of Sephardic Jews in Medieval Spain?

rachelcholst,

@vy @mazeldon

Thanks! I was concerned that this one would also be a boring list of rulers and wars

vy,

@rachelcholst @mazeldon I'm still blown away by the insight that Cervantes Don Quixote begins in the rag market of Toledo where Jewish and Muslim books are being shredded and reused as blank paper.

@rachelcholst @mazeldon this is absolutely not history, but I strongly recommend that you read 'The Lions of Al-Rassan' by Guy Gavriel Kay. You won't learn any facts, but you'll learn a lot of flavour. In a similar vein but with less relevance to the Jewish experience, 'The Curse of Chalion' by Lois McMaster Bujold is worth reading.

rachelcholst,

@simon_brooke @mazeldon you had me at Lois McMaster Bujold

BarrenPlanet,

@rachelcholst @mazeldon My housemate is Jewish and a scholar, I'll ask him when he wakes up and has had enough coffee to mentally function.

Bookmarked for now.
