Heads-up for Backblaze users:

  1. Computer backup pricing is increasing significantly as of October. You probably want to grab a two-year plan to lock in your current rate if you're happy with the service (I just did).
  2. B2 pricing is going up 20%, though in return you'll get free direct egress (vs. via CDN partners, which is already free) for up to 3x your storage amount.

I guess this is what happens when you lose money as a public company and can't raise more (I'm a shareholder FWIW).

@ian They're still expecting negative EBITDA for the year and positive cash flow only in 2025.

I'm glad they're raising prices for my backups, I don't want to have to go to bankruptcy court to reclaim a copy. :)

@ian Unless I'm misreading their announcement, the price seems to be staying the same if you have their 1 year backup option enabled: $7 + $2 => $9

I am excited to finally be able to restore through their app. Having to use the website was painful...

@valorin no, that sounds correct, though annual pricing is a little higher.

@ian Ah, I missed that. Interesting that the annual pricing is going up. 🤔

@valorin each time pricing has increased annual pricing has gone up. But this time annual is switching to the price of ten months to the price of eleven. I guess this is a long term cash flow problem, not a short term one, and Backblaze knows customers are sticky enough that annual subscriptions don't make them any stickier. Which...fair.

@ian Ah interesting. I hope they remain solid, it was a pain moving when crashplan closed...

@ian Don't tell Backblaze that I'd gladly pay $500 a year for the peace of mind the quality, service, and reliability their service provides.

@ian just read the email. Looks like average folks get the one year history for “free”. But almost 2x cost per month is ouch.

@davidbisset @ian My current 2y will renew at the current rate before it goes up it looks like; 2y rate is +30/year which could be worse. Last personal increase was in 2019 according to my billing history.

@farktal @davidbisset Yeah, there was $5/50, then $6/60, then $7/70, now $9/99. Backblaze was bootstrapped for the longest time, but I guess they got tired of that and hopped on this treadmill :(
