A reminder about gun massacres in the USA:

Back in 1979 the Cleveland Elementary School shooting was so shocking that people wrote songs about it.

It was one of two spree shootings that year: there were a total of just 26 shootings in the decade 1970-1979.

Brenda Spencer killed two adults and injured 9 children.

Yesterday (May 6th) there were THREE comparable spree shootings in the USA: the day before that there were FIVE.

There have been 14 spree shootings in the first week of May, 2023.

@cstross And just now I saw how Wikipedia has to disambiguate "Cleveland Elementary School shooting" BECAUSE THERE HAVE BEEN TWO. TWO SHOOTINGS AT DIFFERENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS CALLED "CLEVELAND ELEMENTARY".

I just... can't.

@wjrucklidge @cstross someone said shooting sprees are an average of 12.5 hours apart, now, in the USA.

indieterminacy,

@rayckeith @wjrucklidge @cstross any idea what the ratio of building a new school against a shooting spree in a school would look like?

themself,
@themself@mastodon.scot avatar

@indieterminacy @rayckeith @wjrucklidge @cstross well there are about 115k schools in the US.

Kids go to school from K-12, so for 13 years, at 180 school days per year.

If there averages 1 school shooting per school day then any given kid has about a 1 in 49 chance of being in a school when a shooting is happening.

indieterminacy,

@themself @rayckeith @wjrucklidge @cstross Which gets even grimmer considering that we are discussing just one facet of a persons life. Factoring all the rest must be a major point of distraction; frustration and realisation for this generation.

@cstross we have become numb to it. Those of us that oppose massive gun proliferation die a little inside every time we hear another mass shooting, and know that the politicians won't do a DAMN thing about it. And we can't do anything to get rid of those politicians because a certain sizable subset of americans have fetishized the gun and won't allow ANY sort of progress towards change. It's beyond maddening. :(

@cstross I can't imagine how terrible it must be to live in that society, with that hanging over you literally every day

As shitty as things are here in the UK I keep telling myself "at least we're not America"

@COMPU73E @cstross

Exactly.

The only UK school shooting (Dunblane, 1996) led to a tightening of our gun laws.

As a result there have been no more school shootings in the UK.

AFAIK, school shootings are very rare in most countries outside the US?

But wait, we've been told nothing can be done. Are you implying that we have been lied to? In America?

Meanwhile, in Europe ..

'Tens of thousands of Serbs have joined protests against gun violence in the capital Belgrade and another city after two mass shootings last week.

Seventeen people died in the shootings on Wednesday and Thursday, including eight children in a primary school.

The protesters are demanding that top government officials resign, and want newspapers and TV stations that they say promote violence to be shut down.'
