Fuck Starmer.

The man's a Pink Tory, a reactionary in a Labour rosette. (Also transphobic, racist, and probably homophobic on top—he just keeps the lid on it in public.)

Easiest way to stop boats and disrupt the organised criminals preying on people is to give visas to anyone that wants them. It'd be cheaper and easier to administer.

£100 for 2 years work visa with no recourse to public funds would pay for itself and kill off the boats.

Oh. And before any of you lay any blame on the maintainers of these open source project.

How many of you have blindly installed stuff by running curl | sudo bash ?

Did you verify the binaries and the code the bash script ran/installed? How did you confirm trust on those binaries?

Xz is the oss supply chain attack we know about. You can guarantee there are many many more. How we manage installation, and dependency's should perhaps have a little more thought...

@allpoints @quixoticgeek to be fair in Ubuntu you can control which users have sudo access. So if you're security minded you can turn that off.

There's probably a better option that has something that lets users add/remove packages but doesn't have all the other privileges.

It's not much effort, but you don't want everyone to be able to do su root

themself,
@themself@mastodon.scot avatar

@quixoticgeek @allpoints agree on the defaults aren't secure. I also don't get why you wouldn't prompt for a password, that's so crazy that you may as well not bother with sudo!

Can I say I f***g well approve and will continue to insist on a Black Coffee no matter what the confusion that causes behind the counter

themself,
@themself@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen I'm very much 'Can I have a black coffee please?' When I order.

Also if they ask me if I want larger I always say, 'Does it have more coffee in it, or just extra hot water?'

A lot, and I mean a lot of voters vote SNP not because they support every SNP policy, but because they are reluctantly willing to put up with the policies they don’t like for the sake of Indy. This sort of volte face, and how it was done without conference agreement, is going to strain that resolve. One step too far.

@Indyposterboy if a future referendum voted for Independence then the SNP would splinter into bits. There might just be a big enough bit to win an election as the first government of Independent Scotland, but I wouldn't bet on it.

It's sensible really not to even try to commit anything even remotely contentious ahead of the political singularity than getting independence would be.

@cstross bang on right that we can't do conscription and that the sensible action right now is to wind up the munitions factories to build new war stocks to supply to Ukraine and our reserves.

A modest increase in the size of volunteer forces, especially reservists might be a good idea too.

Life-threatening rain as Met Office escalates Storm Babet to red alert

A red warning is issued only when dangerous weather is forecast and it is 'very likely there will be a risk to life'.

https://news.stv.tv/scotland/life-threatening-rain-as-met-office-escalates-storm-babet-to-rare-red-warning?key=68ViW0HZa4TnWo9qeyNejdW

(Forecast is for a month's worth of rain in 48 hours, starting late tomorrow, plus strong winds. Area affected is the east coast of Scotland, i.e. right here, and parts as far south as Newcastle.)

themself,
@themself@mastodon.scot avatar

@cstross @Wolf_Baginski @adaddinsane @metoffice been teaching my explorer scouts (in Angus, so right in the red zone) not to use BBC weather. The Met Office do some great mountain forecasts, and they're pretty reliable even on an hourly basis.

A reminder about gun massacres in the USA:

Back in 1979 the Cleveland Elementary School shooting was so shocking that people wrote songs about it.

It was one of two spree shootings that year: there were a total of just 26 shootings in the decade 1970-1979.

Brenda Spencer killed two adults and injured 9 children.

Yesterday (May 6th) there were THREE comparable spree shootings in the USA: the day before that there were FIVE.

There have been 14 spree shootings in the first week of May, 2023.

themself,
@themself@mastodon.scot avatar

@indieterminacy @rayckeith @wjrucklidge @cstross well there are about 115k schools in the US.

Kids go to school from K-12, so for 13 years, at 180 school days per year.

If there averages 1 school shooting per school day then any given kid has about a 1 in 49 chance of being in a school when a shooting is happening.
