Do you look back with some nostalgia on live coverage of breaking stories like courtroom trials or political hearings on Twitter? These threads were very popular, providing a forum for real time community engagement.
Well, as demonstrated by Laffy's @GottaLaff live posting today (https://mastodon.social/@GottaLaff/111019296871564013) of the Georgia severance motions for Chesebro and Powell, Mastodon now has the best live coverage of this type of breaking news anywhere.
@mastodonmigration Indeed, her sterling efforts have given everyone truly up to date actual reporting. However, there are many many issues around the world that aren't covered or not covered as well and other types of breaking news rarely seem to occur here.
Mastodon is becoming a viable source for all sorts of news and has the advantage that you don't have to wade through the sludge of hate, nonsense and ads in your feed to get it.
@mastodonmigration I'm pretty sure they're all American...during the terrible earthquakes earlier this year in Turkey and Syria I'm afraid I had to go elsewhere to get up to date info, ditto these days for the fires and floods in Greece, Bulgaria etc. It does appear here eventually but. There is of course BBC's new range of masto sites and sometimes yes they 'break' news.

@mastodonmigration@GottaLaff For me, mastodon’s coming-of-age moment arrived during the Prigozhin mutiny a couple of months ago. I can’t compare to the X place because I never go back there — but the live coverage here was incomparably better than at Bluesky, despite the presence of notable journalists there.
I think we may have work still to do in making stuff like this more discoverable. Hashtags are great but they become less useful as the number of posters burgeons.
