Folks, perhaps the biggest Fediverse news of the week (the month? year?) is that the W3C @w3c, essentially the main standards organization for the internet, has shut down its social media presence on Twitter and moved to Mastodon, and is encouraging others to do the same.
Elon Musk, whose 2022 acquisition of X (then known as Twitter) included major cuts to content moderation around hate speech, drew a fresh wave of backlash this week by endorsing an antisemitic social media post that he described as “the actual truth." #AureFreePress#News#Musk#Twitter#Mastodon#socialmedia#mastodonhelp#Mastodonnews
"However, the biggest upgrade coming to search is one that takes aim directly at X and other Twitter competitors: at last, the ability to search for posts. Before, Mastodon content search relied on hashtags."
Do you look back with some nostalgia on live coverage of breaking stories like courtroom trials or political hearings on Twitter? These threads were very popular, providing a forum for real time community engagement.
Well, as demonstrated by Laffy's @GottaLaff live posting today (https://mastodon.social/@GottaLaff/111019296871564013) of the Georgia severance motions for Chesebro and Powell, Mastodon now has the best live coverage of this type of breaking news anywhere.
Mastodon is becoming a viable source for all sorts of news and has the advantage that you don't have to wade through the sludge of hate, nonsense and ads in your feed to get it.
“The principles of the Fediverse, with an emphasis on local control, quality content, and social value, are far more aligned with our public purposes than those of avowedly commercial networks like Threads or Twitter.”
Is there a good tag or tags I can follow for getting a decent feed of important and new news, or possibly one or two accounts I can follow to see stuff like that show up in 1 column?
Along the lines of 'if it shows up here then it must be pretty important and I might want to pause and take at least a quick look'?
@DarkInsanities I've wanted something like this since I came here. I follow some big news sources like bbc or nyt on bird thing, but I'm tired of digging through a lot of stuff to find real news. #mastodonnews#newstodon#fediverse
Elon Musk just gave you a huge raspberry and middle finger regarding how many tweets you can view on Twitter.
Even my Ukrainian friends are searching for a replacement.
"Now that Twitter doesn't allow to see many tweets, I've started re-reading The Road to Unfreedom by @TimothyDSnyder."
MIGHT I SUGGEST YOU RECOMMEND MASTODON TO YOUR FRIENDS?
Unlimited access to posts AND it's in English too!
